Up to the 7 after the dot, four of the Magneti Marelli 48P2 numbers in our table read exactly alike, and the character after it is what separates them. Those four are 48P2.70, 48P2.72, 48P2.76 and 48P2.7H, the units on record from the Peugeot 206 and the Citroën C2 and C3 with the 1.1 petrol engine.

The car, the engine size and one of the 96 numbers can each bring you close to that character without reaching it. The sections below show where each stops, and what to send so that nothing rests on a guess.

Most rows in our table end in two digits after the dot. 48P2.7H ends in a digit and a letter, and copying 7H as 70 or 76 names a different unit.

Sellers print the same number in more than one way, as IAW 48P2.70, IAW48P2.70 or 48P270, and all three forms describe one unit. Whichever form your label uses, the two characters that follow 48P2 are the part to copy exactly.

A 48P.10, which has 48P, a dot and then digits, is a different unit from any 48P2, so copy the label as it reads rather than tidying it into the form you expect.

If your label carries no 48P2 at all, Peugeot engine ECUs that are labelled otherwise and the Citroën engine ECU pages we keep are the places to look, while a car from neither marque belongs under engine ECU repairs for makers other than these two.

What the Peugeot 206, Citroën C2 and C3 records can settle

Every row in our table with an engine size on record is the 1.1. The size confirms you are among these units, but it cannot choose between them.

The car goes further for two of the four. The Citroën C3 is on record against one number, 48P2.72, and the Citroën C2 against one, 48P2.7H, so a label that matches the car’s number gives two details pointing the same way.

The Peugeot 206 is on record against two numbers, 48P2.70 and 48P2.76, with the same 1.1 engine. For a 206, the car and the size leave both in play, and only the characters after the dot separate them.

A car that differs from these records does not rule a unit out. They show where each unit has been found, not every car it can have come from, and the note at the top of this page says as much: the unit may also fit other models.

Why a 96 number can point to more than one 48P2

A 48P2 label can also carry a Peugeot or Citroën number beginning 96. Our table lists 48P2.36 against 96 426 062 80 and 48P2.70 against 96 424 237 80, and finding the matching one beside the Marelli number is a useful cross-check.

96 459 894 80 behaves differently. It is printed with more than one 48P2 unit, 48P2.72 among them, so it confirms the family of units you hold but not which one; the characters after the dot decide.

A label can carry more than one 96 number, too. Send every number printed on it and leave the matching to us.

Three 48P2 numbers with no car or engine size on record

48P2.36, 48P2.60 and 48P2.40 have no car and no engine size on record in our table. For these three, the Marelli number carries the identification on its own, with the 96 number listed for 48P2.36 as the one extra check.

With no car to compare against, little else on the form would reveal a misread character. Copy the number from the unit itself rather than from a listing or an old invoice.

An empty record is no reason to hold the unit back. Whatever car it came from, tell us, and give its engine size too.

Posting a Magneti Marelli 48P2 to us for repair

Copy the Marelli number and every 96 number onto the Repair Form, exactly as the 48P2 label reads, then add the car, its engine size and a sentence about the fault. Ours is a mail-in service for customers across the UK.
