The Bosch EDC 1.3.3 is the diesel engine ECU built for VAG’s first generation of electronically controlled diesel engines, and it is one of the units we test and repair. It has been long out of production, so every one still in service is a 1990s part, around thirty years old — and so is every unit that could be offered to you as a replacement.

The run behind it was not a short one. Thirty Bosch numbers are recorded against this unit, from 0281001170 through to 0281001470, and the applications we can confirm are spread right across that block: 0281001308 on the VW Golf III 1.9 TDI 90hp, 0281001366 on the Audi A4 1.9 TDI 90hp, and 0281001469 on the VW T4 Transporter 2.5 TDI.

What matters is that the run ended. There is no current-production equivalent of this ECU to buy, so anything offered as a replacement is a unit that has come out of another vehicle. It is a unit of the same age as yours, and whatever service life sits behind it comes with no record.

That changes the question in front of you. It is not an old unit against a new one, because there is no new one in it. It is the unit you already have, whose fault can be traced and put right at component level, set against a unit of the same age whose condition stays unknown until it is on the car and running.

There is one asymmetry worth naming. The unit on your own car is not an unknown quantity — you know the vehicle it has lived in, how the car has been used, and what it was doing when the trouble started. None of that travels with a unit sourced from somewhere else, and none of it can be reconstructed afterwards.

Only one of the two routes starts from something known. The unit in front of you can be put on test and its condition established before anything is decided about it — whether the fault sits in the ECU at all, and if it does, whether it can be repaired. The other route settles the same question by fitting a unit and seeing what the car does with it, and if the answer is no change, the question is still open.

Age on its own is not a verdict on a unit. Hardware of this generation is repairable at component level, and that is how these are handled here: the fault is traced on the board itself and the failed part replaced, rather than the whole unit being exchanged. What testing settles is whether that applies to the one you have.

The states that bring one of these in for testing are ordinary enough: an engine that will not start, and an engine that starts but will not rev out.

What that testing shows, and what putting the fault right would involve, comes back to you with the price on application, and no chargeable work begins until you have approved it. The work is done under magnification with fine-tipped rework equipment, by our own engineers in our own UK workshop, on the board you sent rather than on a substitute for it. Nothing is signed off until it has passed final testing, and the repair carries our 24-month warranty.
