Almost every Ford number on this page has a partner that matches it character for character until the final letter. On an LP2-310 engine ECU, that makes the end of the label the part to read with most care. Every number listed here is on record as an LP2-310 unit from the Ford Mondeo, and we repair engine ECUs bearing any of them at component level, in our own UK workshop.

Six pairs, and the one number without a partner

Three of the pairs share the 98BB base: BE with BF, FE with FF, and KG with KH. Three more share XS7F: BB with BD, RA with RB, and TA with TC. Within each pair, everything up to the final letter is identical.

In four of the pairs, those two final letters sit next to each other in the alphabet: E and F twice, G and H, A and B. On a scuffed or faded label, a neighbouring letter is an easy misreading. BB and BD, and TA and TC, have a letter between them, which helps a little, but not if the last character is the part that has worn.

The number left without a partner is 98BP-12A650-BA, and on that one the place to look is the base rather than the ending. 98BP differs from 98BB by a single letter: P where the six 98BB rows carry B.

Where the engine size cannot split a pair

Engine size on record divides the table into three groups. BE and TA are 1.6 units; FE, FF, BB and BD are 1.8; KG, KH, RA and RB are 2.0. There is no engine size we can give for BF, BA or TC.

Set those sizes against the pairs and four of them come out level: FE and FF are both 1.8, BB and BD both 1.8, KG and KH both 2.0, and RA and RB both 2.0. For those rows, knowing that the car is a Mondeo with a particular engine still leaves two candidates. Only the label decides between them.

The other records behave the same way. KH is also on record from the Ford Cougar, which says nothing either way about KG. FF, KG, BD, RA and RB are on record from the Mondeo Mk2 specifically; where one half of a pair has that record and the other does not, the gap is in the record and tells you nothing about the unit.

The word printed after each number

Our table follows every Ford number with a four-character word. The pairings on record are VOTE with BE, VEND with BF, NEST with FE, NECK with FF, OWL4 with KG, OWL5 with KH, NOSE with BB, DUEL with BD, BASH with RA, LAAN with RB, VOWS with TA and OAKS with TC.

In five of the six pairs, the two words differ in more than one character, so a word that is still legible will often settle an ending that is not. KG and KH are the exception: OWL4 and OWL5 differ by a single character, so on those two, read the number and the word in full.

Some listings print the letter O in these words as a zero, so OWL4 can appear as 0WL4, NOSE as N0SE and VOWS as V0WS.

An LP2-310 unit from logging to final test

Our own engineers carry out the work, on our own equipment. Each unit is logged on arrival, inspected and electrically tested, then taken through diagnostics aimed at the fault you describe.

We contact you with the cause and an estimate, and no chargeable work starts until you authorise it. The repair itself is made at component level, under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment, and the unit is not returned until it has passed final testing. Our 24-month warranty then applies to the repair we made.

Posting your Mondeo unit to us

We work by post, taking units from anywhere in the UK. Before packing yours, list the number, its word and the fault on our Repair Form, together with a short account of how the engine has been behaving.

If your label matches none of these rows, look through our Ford engine ECU repairs under other numbers. For a car from another manufacturer, see engine ECU repairs sorted by maker, or read a plain account of what we repair.

In the table below, the hyphens are dropped and each number runs straight on into its word, so 98BB-12A650-KH is listed as 98BB12A650KH OWL5.
