Between the two Ford numbers on this page the difference is a single letter; between the words printed after them, it is the whole word. 97FB-12A650-HB is on record followed by DUDE, 97FB-12A650-HC followed by MUFF, and both as LP2-110 engine ECUs. We repair either one at component level.

One letter between HB and HC

Both numbers are built on the same base, 97FB-12A650, and both endings begin with H. The only character that changes is the last: B on one, C on the other.

That leaves very little to go on. On a label that has faded, picked up grime or been scratched, one letter does not take much to obscure, and once it is unclear, nothing else in the number separates the two.

Where DUDE and MUFF take over

The words do not share that weakness. DUDE is on record beside the HB number and MUFF beside the HC number, and the two look quite different, so a partly legible word is far harder to mistake than a partly legible ending.

Each half of the label therefore covers for the other. If the ending is hard to read but the word is clear, the word points to the row; if the word has suffered, a clear ending does the same. Both read as ordinary English, yet they belong to the label as much as the number does.

The Ford Puma 1.7 behind both numbers

HB and HC are both on record from the Ford Puma with the 1.7 engine, and both from its 16-valve form. HC is also on record as petrol.

With one model and one engine behind both, the car settles nothing between them; the choice of row falls back to the ending and its word. That is why this page asks for the label rather than the vehicle details alone.

What the repair involves

Every unit is handled by our own engineers in our own UK workshop. It is logged, inspected and tested electrically, then diagnosed against the fault you describe.

We contact you with the cause and an estimate, and no chargeable work starts until you authorise it. The repair is made at component level, under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment, and the unit is returned only after it passes final testing. A 24-month warranty covers the work carried out.

Before the unit leaves you

Units reach us by post from anywhere in the UK. Ahead of posting it, include DUDE or MUFF alongside the full number on our Repair Form, and add a line on what the engine was doing when the fault appeared.

If your label shows some other Ford number, look among Ford engine ECUs with labels unlike these two. For a unit from another vehicle, start with our engine ECU repairs, Ford and otherwise; everything we work on is also gathered on a single page.

Our table runs each Ford number together without hyphens and follows it with its word, so 97FB-12A650-HB is listed as 97FB12A650HB DUDE.
