The Volkswagen Golf is on record against 14 of the 63 Bosch numbers in our EDC16U1/34 table, more than any other car. So a unit described to us only as coming from a Golf could still be any one of those 14. The more often a car appears in this table, the less it settles, which is why this page works through the cars from the most common to the rarest before turning to the label itself.

We repair Bosch EDC16U1/34 diesel engine ECUs at component level in our own UK workshop, and each repair carries a 24-month warranty. They usually reach us with one of the faults in the spec lines above: a car that will not start, no CAN bus signal, or no communication through the diagnostic port. Why does naming a Golf leave so many rows open?

After the Golf comes the Volkswagen Touran, on record against 10 rows, then the Audi A3 against 8. Between them, those three cars account for 32 of the 63 rows, just over half the table. If your unit came out of any of the three, the car on its own still leaves a long list.

Engine size shortens that list without finishing it. Across the 14 Golf rows we hold a 1.9 on record for six, a 2.0 for four, and no size we would rely on for the remaining four. A Golf with a 1.9 therefore still leaves ten rows in play, because a row with no size on record cannot be ruled out by one.

Which cars point to only one or two rows?

The rarer cars do far more of the work. The Seat Leon is on record against a single row, 0281 013 152, with a 2.0 on record. The Seat Altea and the Seat Toledo are both on record against 0281 011 885, and the Volkswagen Jetta against 0281 012 614. The Volkswagen Caddy appears on two rows: 0281 011 666, and 0281 012 272, which has a 2.0 on record.

The Skoda Octavia sits between the two groups, on record against six rows, with a 1.9 on record for some and a 2.0 for others.

A car on record for a row shows where that Bosch number has been found, not every vehicle it went into, so a car missing from a row does not rule that row out.

Some rows carry less. Eleven are on record by marque only, eight from Volkswagens and three from Seats, without a model we hold enough records to name. For four more, 0281 011 904, 0281 011 956, 0281 012 290 and 0281 012 562, we hold too little on record to name a car at all, and the numbers on the label are the whole match.

What sets the five Transporter rows apart?

The Volkswagen Transporter is on record against five rows, and they are the only rows in our table whose VAG number does not begin 03G. One begins 070: 070906016, printed beside 0281 010 732, which has a 2.5 on record. The other four begin 038, and each has a 1.9 on record: 0281 010 734, 0281 010 735, 0281 011 855 and 0281 011 856.

For a unit taken from a van, that makes the first three characters of the VAG number a useful first check. A label reading 038 or 070 points to these five rows; one reading 03G points to the rest of the table.

Why are the letters after 03G906016 the part to copy exactly?

The other 58 rows all print a VAG number that begins with the same nine characters, 03G906016. What tells those rows apart comes after them, usually one or two letters, and those letters decide which row is yours.

03G906016HJ and 03G906016HK differ only in their final letter, and both have a 2.0 on record. The first sits beside 0281 012 253 and is on record from a Golf; the second sits beside 0281 012 251 and is on record from a Touran. Engine size cannot separate them, and one misread letter would put your unit on the wrong row.

0281 010 730 is the exception in the other direction: its VAG number stops at 03G906016, with nothing after it. Three rows, 0281 011 891, 0281 011 904 and 0281 012 641, print two VAG numbers in the same cell. If your label carries more than one, copy every one of them in the order they appear.

How is your unit handled between arrival and return?

Each unit is logged on arrival, inspected and tested electrically, then taken through diagnostics aimed at its fault, with component work done by our own engineers under a microscope using temperature-controlled rework equipment.

We contact you with what testing found, and no work begins until you authorise it. Once the unit passes final testing, it comes back to you with a 24-month warranty on the repair carried out.
