A misread digit on an engine ECU label is often caught, because the row it leads to names a different car from the one the unit came out of. On this Bosch EDC16C2 page that check works for one row in four. The other three belong to the same Jeep, so a slip between them looks perfectly reasonable.

Four rows, two cars, one Fits line

Our EDC16C2 table holds four Bosch numbers, every one a diesel unit paired with a Chrysler number. One row, 0281012283 with P05034 094AH, is the Chrysler PT Cruiser 2.2 CRD. The other three, 0281012593, 0281012594 and 0281013649, all came out of the Jeep Cherokee 2.8 CRD.

The spec lines above say Fits: Chrysler, and every row does carry a Chrysler part number, but three of the four vehicles are Jeeps. A Cherokee unit belongs on this page, and our workshop handles it exactly as it would a PT Cruiser unit.

The PT Cruiser row: where the car can check the label

If your unit came out of a PT Cruiser 2.2 CRD, the car and the label should agree on one row: 0281012283, paired with P05034 094AH. That agreement is worth having, because it confirms the reading as well as the fitment.

Should your reading match one of the Cherokee rows instead, the mismatch is the warning. Either a digit has been misread, or the unit did not come from the car you think it did. Check the label again before the unit is packed.

Three Cherokee 2.8 CRD rows the car cannot separate

For a Cherokee 2.8 CRD, knowing the car narrows the table to three rows and goes no further. 0281012593, 0281012594 and 0281013649 are each recorded against that same vehicle, so whichever you read, the car agrees with it. A slip that lands on the wrong Cherokee row passes that check unnoticed.

On these three, the label is the only evidence that settles the row. That is why we ask for both of its numbers, the Bosch and the Chrysler, rather than either one on its own.

One allowance applies to the Chrysler numbers. The two letters at the end vary between records on three of the four units, so give us the number exactly as your label prints it, letters included; the match is made on the digits in front of them. Closing letters that differ from ours are not, by themselves, a sign of the wrong row.

0281012593 or 0281012594: the slip that still fits

Two of the Cherokee units sit side by side. Their Bosch numbers are consecutive, 0281 012 593 and 0281 012 594, identical up to the final digit. Their Chrysler numbers are close as well: P56044 773AD and P56044 775AE share the opening P56044 and, suffix aside, part company only at the last digit of the middle block, a 3 against a 5.

Each pair of numbers splits at its own digit, so reading both gives you two separate chances to catch a slip. If the Bosch number points to one of these rows and the Chrysler number to the other, one of them has been misread, and the car cannot say which.

The third Cherokee unit is easier to keep apart. 0281013649 sits in the 0281 013 range rather than 0281 012, and its Chrysler number, P05187 221AB, opens P05187 instead of P56044.

What happens to an EDC16C2 in our workshop

An EDC16C2 sent to us stays in our own UK workshop from start to finish, worked on by our own engineers. It is logged on arrival, inspected, electrically tested, and then put through diagnostics chosen for the fault you describe.

Once we know which component has failed, we report what we have found, and no chargeable work starts until you have approved it. The repair is made at component level on your original unit, under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment, so the ECU that goes back into the PT Cruiser or Cherokee is the one that came out.

It leaves only after passing final testing, and the repair carries a 24-month warranty.

Before packing yours, send us a Repair Form carrying the numbers from the case: the Bosch number, the Chrysler number with its suffix, the car and its engine size, and a line on how the fault shows itself.
