Consecutive part numbers are the trap on this page. Bosch 0281 012 334 and 0281 012 335 sit next to each other, and so do BMW DDE numbers 7 797 496 and 7 797 497, yet the pairs cross: 334 goes with 497, a 3 Series E90 320d, while 335 goes with 496, a 1 Series E87 diesel.
Our table for the Bosch EDC16C35 holds twenty-four rows. Twenty-three print a BMW number beside the Bosch number, and twenty-one of those pairs can be tied to a vehicle, from the MINI 1.4 diesel to the X5 3.0d.
Which EDC16C35 pairs cross over?
Two sets in the table cross this way. In each, both columns run in sequence and the higher Bosch number carries the lower DDE number:
- 0281 012 334 with 7 797 497: 3 Series E90 320d
- 0281 012 335 with 7 797 496: 1 Series E87 diesel, badge not named
- 0281 013 501 with 7 803 373: a 2.0 diesel, model not named
- 0281 013 502 with 7 803 372: 3 Series E90 318d
Take the row beside the right one and a 320d unit is mistaken for a 1 Series unit, or a 318d unit for one whose model the records leave open. Our table does not say why the numbering crosses, and we do not guess.
One column read alone can point to the wrong row; both numbers from the same label, checked against one row, settle it.
DDE numbers one digit apart under different Bosch numbers
In two further places the DDE column puts two rows side by side while the Bosch column keeps them apart.
7 799 854 belongs with 0281 012 880, a 3 Series E90 318d. 7 799 855 belongs with 0281 012 754, a 2.0 diesel of unnamed model. If the last digit of the DDE number is worn, the Bosch number beside it tells them apart.
7 798 180 and 7 798 184 differ only at the end. 7 798 180 pairs with 0281 012 501 in a 3 Series E90 320d, 7 798 184 with 0281 013 852 in a 5 Series E60/E61 535d. One misread digit moves the unit from a 3 Series to a 5 Series.
Where the car narrows the search, from MINI to X5
These are the twenty-one rows with a DDE number that we can tie to a vehicle, ordered roughly from the smallest car to the largest, with the three 2.0 diesel rows of unnamed model at the end. Bosch number first, DDE number in brackets:
- MINI 1.4 diesel: 0281 012 216 (7 799 152)
- MINI Cooper 1.6 diesel: 0281 014 295 (7 808 778) and 0281 015 233 (7 810 909)
- 1 Series E87 118d or 120d: 0281 011 416 (7 797 356) and 0281 011 631 (7 795 844)
- 1 Series E87 diesel, badge not named: 0281 011 963 (7 797 217) and 0281 012 335 (7 797 496)
- 3 Series E90 318d: 0281 012 880 (7 799 854) and 0281 013 502 (7 803 372)
- 3 Series E90 320d: 0281 012 334 (7 797 497) and 0281 012 501 (7 798 180)
- 3 Series E90 325d: 0281 012 994 (7 805 288)
- 325d and 525d, recorded against both: 0281 015 130 (7 809 941)
- X3 E83 2.0d: 0281 014 176 (7 805 349)
- X3 E83 3.0d: 0281 013 052 (7 801 217)
- 5 Series E60/E61 535d: 0281 012 191 (7 796 678) and 0281 013 852 (7 798 184)
- X5 3.0d: 0281 014 437 (7 806 976)
- A 2.0 diesel, model not named: 0281 012 754 (7 799 855), 0281 013 251 (7 801 711) and 0281 013 501 (7 803 373)
The Fits line above leaves out the X5; one row with a DDE number is recorded against it.
Even among these rows, the car often leaves more than one. The 318d, 320d, 535d and MINI Cooper 1.6 diesel have two rows each, a 325d has two once the row shared with the 525d is counted, and the 1 Series E87 has four.
The three rows we name no car for
Two rows carry a BMW number but no vehicle on this page. 0281 014 575 pairs with 7 808 125 many times over in the records, but the cars behind it are too thinly documented to name. 0281 016 638 is identified by its Bosch number, and we cite no vehicle for it.
The third, 0281 013 050, has no DDE number in our table. We identify it by the Bosch number alone and attach no vehicle to it.
Quote the Bosch number and whatever the label prints beside it. If it shows no DDE number, leave it at that rather than taking one from a nearby row: on this page, a neighbour can belong to a different car.
Reading both numbers off the EDC16C35 case
The Bosch reference is ten digits starting 0281; BMW’s DDE reference is seven. Our table groups the digits and a label may not, so copy them in sequence.
Copy both from the same label, in full. Each pairing we tie to a car, and the one at 0281 014 575, appears in at least ten independent records, so when both numbers on your label agree with one row, that row is yours. A unit that matches on one number but not the other is worth raising with us before posting.
Inside our workshop: how an EDC16C35 is tested and repaired
Every unit we receive is logged first, against the two numbers and the car details on your form. It is then inspected by eye, tested electrically and taken through diagnostics that follow the fault you reported, all in our own UK workshop, by our own engineers and on our own equipment.
Before any chargeable work, we tell you what the tests found and what the repair would involve, and we wait for your go-ahead. Repairs are made to the failed components on the board, under a microscope and with temperature-controlled rework equipment. A unit is not finished until it passes final testing, and the ECU returned to you is the one you sent, covered by a 24-month warranty on the repair. You can refit it plug and play, because a repair of the unit itself keeps its coding and leaves nothing to recode.
We work by post from anywhere in the UK. Please keep each pair intact on the Repair Form, and add what the car was doing when the fault appeared.
If the case names something other than EDC16C35, you have a different BMW engine ECU. For a car from another manufacturer, switch to that manufacturer’s engine ECUs.
Our full EDC16C35 table follows, in part-number order, with the Bosch reference on the left.
