Twelve Bosch numbers are recorded for the EDC1.3.1, the diesel engine ECU in the BMWs on this page, and the car yours came from decides how many of them are worth checking. Three cars point to one number each; the E36 325tds points to five. The sections below climb from the single-row cars to the five-row car, and each one ends at the number printed on your unit’s case, because that is what we identify it by.
One number each: the 325td, the E34 525td and the E39 525tds
Three cars on this page leave you with a single row. The E36 325td, badged without the s, is recorded against 0 281 001 292. The E34 525td, also without the s, is recorded against 0 281 001 298, a row with a confirmed BMW number, 2245907. The E39 525tds has one row to itself: 0 281 001 373.
That missing letter is worth checking before anything else. The 325td and 325tds both run the M51 2.5 six, yet they sit on different rows, and the E34 525td and 525tds split the same way. Read the whole badge, not just the numbers in it.
A single row is a strong lead, not a confirmed match. An engine ECU can be changed at some point in a car’s life, and the 325td’s row rests on fewer records than most on this page, so compare the Bosch number on the case before you send anything.
Two numbers: the E36 318tds
The 318tds is the one car here with a four-cylinder engine, the M41 1.7, and it is recorded against two rows: 0 281 001 243 and 0 281 001 711. Both carry a confirmed BMW number, 2245541 beside 243 and 2247335 beside 711.
We hold nothing that ties either row to a particular version of the 318tds, so the car cannot choose between them. The case can, at a glance, because the two Bosch numbers end in 243 and 711 and look nothing alike.
Three numbers: the E34 525tds
The E34 525tds is recorded against three rows: 0 281 001 294, 0 281 001 295 and 0 281 001 299. None of them has a BMW number in our table, so for this car the Bosch number carries the whole identification.
These three rows rest on a smaller body of records than the rows with confirmed BMW numbers, which is one more reason to go by the case. One of them, 294, is also recorded in the E36 325tds, so a 294 unit can come out of either car.
Five numbers: the E36 325tds
No car on this page has more rows than the E36 325tds: 0 281 001 201, 294, 378, 379 and 380. Two of the five carry confirmed BMW numbers, 2245190 beside 201 and 2246682 beside 380, and 294 is the row it shares with the E34 525tds.
Nothing in our records links any of the five to a particular version of the car, and we do not invent a split. For a 325tds owner, knowing the car is where the search starts, not where it finishes.
Take particular care with 378, 379 and 380. They are consecutive numbers, so one misread final digit lands you on a neighbouring row. Write the Bosch number out in full, exactly as the case shows it.
What the BMW number column can tell you
Five of the twelve rows carry a BMW number we have confirmed against its Bosch number: 201, 243, 298, 380 and 711. If your label shows one of those pairs, it matches our records, and quoting both numbers makes the identification quick.
Four rows, 292, 294, 295 and 299, have an empty BMW cell, and we leave them that way rather than fill them by guesswork. The E39’s 373 is a different case: that unit has been supplied under more than one BMW number, so its BMW number alone does not identify it.
Whatever BMW number your label carries, copy it exactly as printed and send it with the Bosch number. We identify the unit from the Bosch number; the BMW number is recorded with it.
Repair and return by post
Every EDC1.3.1 that reaches us is logged, checked by eye and tested electrically, then taken through diagnostics aimed at the fault you described. The work stays in-house: our own engineers, in our own UK workshop, on our own equipment.
We then tell you what we found and what the repair involves, with a quote, and no chargeable work starts until you agree. Failed components on the circuit board are traced and replaced individually, under a microscope and with temperature-controlled rework equipment. The unit must pass a final test before it leaves, it comes back as the same ECU you sent, and the repair is covered by our 24-month warranty.
We take engine ECUs by post from anywhere in the UK. Note the Bosch number, any BMW number beside it, the car’s full badge and body (E34, E36 or E39), and how the engine has been running, then let us know on the Repair Form.
If your unit came out of another BMW, browse the other BMW diesels and petrols we repair. For any other make, go to engine ECUs for other brands of car.
Our table lists the twelve rows below, Bosch number first, with the BMW number beside it where one is recorded.
