The Bosch EDC16C1 numbers on this page do not all come with the same amount of information about the car. Of the thirteen rows that carry a BMW DDE number, eight are recorded against a named model, four against a body alone and one against nothing more than an engine size. The fourteenth row has no DDE number, and we name no car for it.
Which of those groups your unit falls into decides how far the car can take you, and where the label on the case has to finish the job.
Eight rows where the records name the car
These are the rows recorded against a specific model, Bosch number first and BMW DDE number in brackets:
- 3 Series E46 318d: 0281 011 653 (7 794 623)
- 3 Series E46 320d: 0281 010 565 (7 789 572) and 0281 011 122 (7 793 863)
- 3 Series E46 330d: 0281 011 223 (7 793 540)
- 5 Series E60/E61 530d: 0281 011 224 (7 794 218)
- 7 Series E65 730d: 0281 011 231 (7 794 058)
- X5 E53 3.0d: 0281 011 414 (7 794 626)
- X3 E83 2.0d: 0281 011 564 (7 796 571)
Even at this level the badge does not always settle it. The E46 320d has two rows, 565 and 122, and nothing in our records says which 320d carries which, so read the label rather than choosing by model.
The 730d deserves a second look. The Fits line in the spec block above names the 318d, 320d, 330d, 530d, X3 and X5 but not the 7 Series, so an E65 owner could easily take this page to be about someone else’s car. Row 231 says otherwise.
E60 and E61 5 Series: five rows, one body
The E60 and E61 5 Series account for five of the thirteen rows, more than any other body. One of them, 0281 011 224 with DDE number 7 794 218, is recorded against the 530d. The other four are recorded against the E60/E61 5 Series diesel with no engine size attached:
- 0281 011 120 (7 795 553)
- 0281 011 762 (7 796 680)
- 0281 012 091 (7 796 637)
- 0281 012 190 (7 802 266)
For these four, the sources we checked split between engine sizes, so we do not state one. That affects a 530d owner as much as anyone: a 530d E60 or E61 may carry 224, but it may equally carry one of the four above.
On a 5 Series of this body, then, the car gets you to five rows and stops there. The DDE number on the label, or the Bosch number beside it, is what places your unit.
One row known only as a 2.0 diesel
0281 013 251, paired with DDE number 7 801 711, is a confirmed pairing without a confirmed model. The records place it in a 2.0 diesel but spread it across more than one BMW model line, so we describe it as a 2.0 diesel and nothing more.
That means the badge cannot rule this row in or out. If the label on your unit shows 7 801 711 or 0281 013 251, this is your row, whichever BMW it came from.
0281 011 121: the row with no DDE number
0281 011 121 sits in our table with its OEM column empty. The Bosch number is enough to identify the unit, so the row stays, but we give it no DDE number and no vehicle, because what we found about it did not agree closely enough to print.
If your case carries 0281 011 121, quote it along with any BMW number printed beside it. Please do not borrow a DDE number from another row or from a listing elsewhere; send only what the label shows.
Copying the two numbers from an EDC16C1 label
Each of the thirteen Bosch-to-DDE pairings in this table is confirmed in at least nine independent records, so a label that matches a row on both numbers is a sound match. The Bosch number is the ten digits beginning 0281; the DDE number is BMW’s seven-digit reference.
Our table prints each DDE number in groups, as in 7 789 572, while your label may show the same seven digits as one unbroken run. Either is fine; copy the digits in the order printed.
Take particular care with the last digit. Four rows begin 7 794, and two of them, 7 794 623 on the E46 318d and 7 794 626 on the X5, differ only at the very end.
From the post to the bench: your EDC16C1 at our workshop
We log the unit against the numbers and car details you give us, inspect it visually and test it electrically, then run diagnostics specific to the fault you describe. All of it happens in our own UK workshop, carried out by our own engineers on our own equipment.
We then contact you with what we found and what the repair involves, and no chargeable work begins until you authorise it. Faulty components are repaired at board level under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment, and the unit must pass final testing before it leaves. You get your own ECU back, with a 24-month warranty on the repair.
We work by post, across the UK. Once the numbers are copied, put the body code and both numbers into the Repair Form, with a note of how the engine has been behaving.
If your BMW’s engine ECU is not an EDC16C1, look through every other BMW unit we have a page for. For a car from another manufacturer, go to the starting page for every make.
The fourteen rows below keep our table’s own order, Bosch number first and BMW DDE number second.

Gusi
Hello Gusi
Thank you for the enquiry,
We may be able to help with providing you the ECU units but I’m afraid we don’t have supply harnesses. Also I notice the ECU part number has 1 digit missing. Please provide the full 10-digit Bosch number so that we can confirm stock availability for you.
Kind Regards
Jason
