Everything we hold on file for the Bosch DME ML2.1 fits on one line of a table: Bosch number 0 261 200 011. There is no second row to choose between and no BMW number printed beside it, so on this page that one Bosch number does all of the identifying.

Three BMW model lines, one M30 engine, one line in our table

That line serves three BMW model lines. Our records place 0 261 200 011 in the E24 635CSi, the E23 735i and the E28 535i, which makes it a 6 Series, a 7 Series and a 5 Series unit all at once.

What the three cars have in common is under the bonnet. Each runs the M30 3.5-litre straight-six, and it is that shared engine, not the badge on the boot lid, that explains why one Bosch number reaches across three model lines.

The spec lines at the top of this page name only the 635CSi under Fits. The line headed Engines lists E23, E24 and E28, which are the chassis codes of the same three cars, and the note below it says the unit may fit other models. The 735i and 535i are the other models we can name, and we add none beyond them.

Why the BMW number cell is empty

Elsewhere in our BMW pages, a BMW part number usually sits beside each Bosch number. On this row the cell is blank on purpose: we have not confirmed a BMW number for 0 261 200 011, so we leave the space empty rather than print a guess.

If your label carries a BMW number, copy it exactly as printed and send it along with the Bosch number. It tells us more about your particular unit, but it is not what we match on here. The Bosch number is.

A label with no BMW number on it, or one you cannot make out, does not hold up the enquiry. For this unit, the Bosch number on its own is enough to tell us we are looking at an ML2.1.

Copying 0 261 200 011 without a slip

With the whole identification resting on one number, it is worth copying with care. Our table prints it as 0261 200 011 and this page writes it as 0 261 200 011. The spacing makes no difference; the ten digits, in their order, are what we need.

The first seven digits, 0 261 200, also open the Bosch numbers of other BMW DME units we repair. It is the last three, 011, that mark this one out in our records, so those are the digits to check twice before you send them.

When the label on an early Motronic has worn

The ML2.1 is an early Motronic unit, and the label on a DME of this age may be scuffed, faded or partly lifted away. Send whatever you can read, and say which digits are missing or uncertain.

We will not fill in a partial number from the car’s details. Knowing the car tells us you are on the right page; it does not tell us what the label said. Where a number cannot be read in full, we confirm what the unit is when it reaches our workshop rather than guessing beforehand.

What happens to an ML2.1 in our workshop

Your DME is logged against the details from your form, looked over, and tested electrically before diagnostics aimed at the fault you described. Our own engineers carry out every stage in our UK workshop, on our own equipment.

Once the cause is clear, we tell you what we found and send a quote. Nothing chargeable is done until you say yes.

The repair itself is made at component level: the failed parts on the circuit board are traced, then renewed under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment. The unit is only signed off when it passes a final test, and the specific repair is covered by our 24-month warranty.

The DME posted back to you is the one that came out of your car, with 0 261 200 011 still on its label.
