Before a T3’s Digijet engine ECU goes in the post, spend a couple of minutes at the distributor making sure it really is a Digijet. On the T3, a vacuum advance unit on the distributor means ignition advance is being handled there rather than by the ECU, which is how the van’s Digijet works and how a Digifant engine does not.
The three part numbers on this page come from two quite different Volkswagens: the T3 Transporter with the 2.1 DJ engine, and the 1.3 Golf 2 and Polo. The T3 check comes first, because on a van it decides whether you are on the right page at all.
Digijet or Digifant? On a T3, check the distributor first
Digijet is Volkswagen’s development of Bosch L-Jetronic. An air-flow meter measures the air the engine draws in, and the ECU uses that reading to run a multipoint fuel injection system.
Digijet ran water-cooled boxer engines in the T3, including the 2.1 DJ, and the 1.3 NZ engine in the Polo and Golf.
On the T3, the ECU’s job ends at the fuel. Ignition advance stays with the distributor, which adjusts the timing through its own vacuum advance unit. Digifant took the ignition under the ECU as well, so on a Digifant engine the control unit sets the timing itself.
On a T3, that difference is one you can see for yourself. A vacuum advance unit on the distributor is the practical sign of a Digijet van, and it is worth confirming before anything is unplugged or posted.
It also explains why the two systems are not interchangeable on the T3. A Digifant ECU is built to control ignition that, on a Digijet van, the distributor handles, so one cannot stand in for the other. If your van’s timing is under ECU control, the unit is not one of the three here; start from Volkswagen engine ECUs of other kinds instead.
Which of the three have you got? Read the label
The number that identifies a Digijet unit is the Volkswagen part number printed on its label, written in the form 025 906 021 E. It is also the number we check your unit against when it reaches the workshop.
The maker’s name on the case is a weaker guide. Digijet units do not all carry the same maker’s name — Triumph-Adler, KEN and Bosch all appear — so the name tells you who built that particular unit, not which of the three numbers on this page it answers to.
Within this page, the first three digits split the list cleanly. 025 is the prefix on both T3 units, and 030 on the 1.3 unit for the Golf 2 and Polo. After that, one letter separates the two T3 numbers, so clean the label before you read it and copy the whole number, letter included.
T3 and T25 2.1 DJ vans: 025 906 021 E and F
Both T3 numbers belong to the same van and the same engine. 025 906 021 E and 025 906 021 F are each recorded against the T3 Transporter with the 2.1-litre DJ engine, and F is also recorded under T25, the name the T3 was sold under in the UK.
The records add one detail for E: it is the unit recorded against the 2.1 DJ with an automatic gearbox. The records we hold do not settle a gearbox for F. If you are working from the van rather than from the unit, do not settle on F by elimination; the letter on the label decides it.
A van that has been converted or restored may not still carry the ECU it was built with, so we identify a T3 unit by its label rather than by what the van ought to have.
When you note the number, note the gearbox as well. It takes a moment to add and gives us a cross-check on an E unit.
Golf 2 and Polo 1.3: 030 906 021 J
030 906 021 J is the only 1.3 unit on this page, and it serves two cars. It is recorded against the Golf 2, also listed as the Golf II, in 1.3 form, and against the Polo 1.3.
Because one number covers both, the model name does not choose between units here: a Golf 2 1.3 and a Polo 1.3 lead to the same J. What the car does confirm is the engine size. A Golf 2 or Polo with a different engine sits outside what this number is recorded against, so check the label before assuming a match.
If your label carries a Volkswagen number that is not one of the three listed here, send us the number before the unit and we will confirm whether it is covered.
What happens when your Digijet unit reaches us
Engine ECUs are the only thing our UK workshop repairs, and the work is done in-house. Each Digijet unit is booked in and looked over, then tested electrically; only after that does work on the specific fault start, carried out at component level on your unit rather than by swapping in another.
Testing ends with a call or message from us setting out the fault and the repair it needs; nothing chargeable is done until you say yes. The repair then carries a 24-month warranty.
The service works by post, for owners and garages anywhere in the UK. For a unit from another manufacturer, start from engine ECU repairs by manufacturer. For a Digijet, the Repair Form needs the full Volkswagen number and the vehicle. On a T3, also note the distributor check on the Repair Form, along with the gearbox.
The three Digijet part numbers this page covers are listed below. Check your label against them before you fill in the form.
