One engine code, AHW, is recorded behind both of the Magneti Marelli IAW 4AV units on this page. The engine alone will not tell you which one you are holding; the car and the label will, and the sections below show how.

Both are petrol engine ECUs, and every car the records agree on for either unit is a Volkswagen: the Golf 1.4 16V for the IAW 4AV.V0, and the Lupo 1.4 and Polo 1.4 for the IAW 4AV.V6.

One engine code behind two different units

An engine code is often the first detail a garage reaches for when it needs to identify an engine ECU, because it names the engine rather than just the model.

On the 4AV that shortcut runs out early. AHW is recorded against the V0 and against the V6, so knowing a car has the AHW engine still leaves both units in play.

The code is still worth noting. It is consistent with either unit on this page, and it belongs on the Repair Form with everything else; it simply cannot choose between the two.

The car tells them apart: Golf for V0, Lupo or Polo for V6

Where the engine code stops, the car takes over. The IAW 4AV.V0 is recorded in the VW Golf with the 1.4 16V engine, and it is the Golf’s unit of the pair.

The IAW 4AV.V6 is recorded in the VW Lupo 1.4 and the VW Polo 1.4. In the records we rely on, the Golf sits only against the V0, and the Lupo and Polo only against the V6.

So a 4AV that came out of a Golf points to the V0, and one from a Lupo or a Polo points to the V6. That is a strong pointer rather than proof, which is why we still identify the unit from its label.

What the label on a 4AV shows

The Marelli reference is printed as the family, IAW 4AV, then a dot and the variant, V0 or V6. A Volkswagen part number sits alongside it.

For the V0 that number is 036 906 014 AA, and for the V6 it is 036 906 014 CD. Both begin 036 906 014 and differ only in the final two letters, so a number read off with its ending missed will fit either unit.

Between these two units, the variant code or the complete Volkswagen number is enough on its own to tell them apart. Having both in front of you is the check that the case has been read correctly.

A label that reads anything other than IAW 4AV.V0 or IAW 4AV.V6 belongs to a different unit from the two here, and our engine ECU repair home page is the place to start looking for it.

Volkswagens only, despite the wider VAG line

The spec block at the top of the page carries the broad, group-wide VAG line. The cars behind these two units are a narrower set.

Golf, Lupo and Polo are the only models the records agree on for the V0 and the V6, and all three are Volkswagens. That is why this page talks about Volkswagens alone.

If your unit came from another Volkswagen, or turns out not to be a 4AV at all, look through every engine ECU designation we cover for Volkswagen.

How we repair a Magneti Marelli IAW 4AV

Repairs here are handled entirely through the post, for customers throughout the UK. Once a 4AV is logged in, it is inspected, put through electrical tests and then diagnosed against the fault you reported.

Board-level work is done under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework tools. The component that has failed is repaired or replaced on the board, rather than the whole unit being exchanged, and our own engineers carry it out in our own workshop.

When the diagnosis is complete we report what we found, and the repair begins once you give the go-ahead. A repaired 4AV must pass a final test before it leaves us, and the repair carries a 24-month warranty.

Note the Marelli variant, the Volkswagen number, the car and the engine code if you have it, then check the match with our engineers through the Repair Form before the unit goes in the post.

Both IAW 4AV references we repair are listed below with their Volkswagen numbers.
