The Citroën ZX and the Peugeot 405 are recorded against the same two Bosch MP5.1 units in our table, and the Citroën Xantia shares one of them while having a second of its own. On the Peugeot 306 side the pattern reverses: one car, five units. Below is which units each car shares, how far the car gets you, and where only the label will do.

Which 1.8 MP5.1 units the ZX, 405 and Xantia share

Three of the nine rows are recorded against a 1.8 engine: 0261200664, 0261200691 and 0261204123. Of these, 0261200664 is the unit that connects the three cars, because it is recorded on the Citroën ZX, the Peugeot 405 and the Citroën Xantia alike.

Each car then adds one more. A ZX or 405 with the 1.8 leaves 0261200664 and 0261204123 in play, while a Xantia 1.8 leaves 0261200664 and 0261200691. Whichever of the three you drive, the choice is framed the same way: 0261200664, or the other unit recorded on your car.

The Bosch number on the label settles it. 0261204123 also carries a Peugeot or Citroën part number, listed in our table as 96 245 184 and printed on the label as 96 245 184 80, so on that unit either number leads to the right row.

Five MP5.1 units recorded on the Peugeot 306 1.6

The 1.6 rows centre on one car. 0261200652, 0261200676, 0261200678, 0261200694 and 0261204052 are all recorded on the Peugeot 306 with a 1.6 engine, so for a 306 1.6 the car and the engine size leave all five standing.

The car is still worth putting on the form, because it confirms you are looking at the right family. Telling the five apart, though, is the label’s job. Two of them have a Peugeot or Citroën number we can confirm: 0261200676 with 96 171 614, printed on the label as 96 171 614 80, and 0261204052 with 96 249 359 80.

0261204052 is also the one unit in the 1.6 group recorded on a second car. It appears against the Citroën Saxo as well as the 306, so among the units on this page a Saxo 1.6 points to 0261204052.

0261200650 and reading an MP5.1 label in full

One row, 0261200650, has no car or engine size on record with us. It is an MP5.1 we list all the same, and its label is how we confirm it.

Seven of the nine Bosch numbers begin 02612006 and differ only in their last two digits. A misread figure can therefore move you to another row, sometimes one recorded on a different car: 0261200691 and 0261200694 differ by one digit, yet one is recorded on the Xantia 1.8 and the other on the 306 1.6.

The same care applies beyond this table. A Bosch number one digit away from one of these can belong to a different unit entirely, so copy all ten digits from the unit itself.

The Bosch MP5.1.1 and MP5.2 are separate units with their own numbers, so check the full name on the label as well as the number.

What to send with a Bosch MP5.1 on the Repair Form

Our table lists some of these units by Bosch number only. On the Repair Form, give every number printed on the label, meaning the Bosch number beginning 0261 and any Peugeot or Citroën number beside it, together with the car, its engine size and the fault you have noticed. If a digit is worn or hard to read, say which one.

If the label names a different Bosch unit, the Peugeot section of our engine ECU repairs and the matching Citroën section cover the rest of those two makes. For any other manufacturer, go to engine ECU repairs for all makes.

How we repair a Bosch MP5.1 you send in

Complete the Repair Form, with the fault in your own words, then post the unit to us. Ours is a mail-in service covering the whole of the UK, so only the ECU has to travel.

We log each unit as it comes in, inspect it, test it electrically and then diagnose it against the fault on your form. Our own engineers carry out the repair in-house at component level, under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment, and your own MP5.1 is the unit that goes back in the post.

Before any chargeable work starts, we tell you what we have found, and nothing goes ahead until you agree. The repair is complete only when the unit passes final testing, and it is covered by our 24-month warranty.
