Ask what size of engine a Bosch MED9.5.10 ran before you ask which car it came out of. The references on this page are recorded on 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 petrol engines, and the size on its own sends you to one of two groups of part numbers. Start from the model name instead and you can spend your time in the wrong group.

Nothing here rests on a single listing. A car, an engine size or an engine code is put against a reference only where at least two independent sources record it there, and where the records say less, so does this page.

Which engine sizes the MED9.5.10 covers

Three capacities run through the references in the table: 1.4, 1.6 and 2.0 litres. The 1.6 is the most common, recorded against thirteen references, and the 2.0 is recorded against nine. 0261 S02 004 and 0261 S02 068 are both recorded as 1.4s.

Most are recorded more precisely as FSI petrol engines. For 0261 S02 046 and 0261 S02 124 the records give the capacity, a 2.0 and a 1.6 respectively, and go no further, so neither is described here as an FSI.

The reason to settle the size first is practical. The engine size is on the logbook and usually known before the unit is even out of the car, whereas the label on the case has to be found, cleaned and read character by character. Using the thing you already know to cut the list down means there is less to read off the label when you get to it.

How engine size lines up with the 03C and 06F numbers

Every reference on this page carries a vehicle-manufacturer number beginning either 03C or 06F, and the three engine sizes divide between those two groups without any overlap.

The nine references printed with a 06F 906 056 number are all recorded on a 2.0. The references printed with a 03C number are all recorded on a 1.4 or a 1.6.

That is a pattern in the records for these references and it is offered as nothing more. It is not a general method for reading VAG numbers, and it should not be carried over to other Bosch units. What it does, on this page, is tell you which group to open first.

In practice, a 2.0 points you to the nine 06F references, and a 1.4 or 1.6 points you to the 03C references. From there the trailing letters on the vehicle-manufacturer number, read together with the ten-character Bosch number, settle which unit you are holding.

Why the model name will not choose the group for you

The obvious alternative is to start from the car. On this unit it does not work, because the three models behind most of the references each appear in both groups.

The Golf shows it most plainly. Twelve Golf references carry a 03C number and are recorded on a 1.4 or a 1.6. Two more, 0261 S02 015 and 0261 S02 097, carry a 06F number and are recorded on a 2.0. Knowing the car is a Golf leaves both groups open; knowing it is a 2.0 Golf closes one of them.

The Octavia splits down the middle. 0261 S02 188 and 0261 S02 380 are Octavia 1.6 references on 03C numbers, while 0261 S02 252 and 0261 S02 260 are Octavia 2.0 references on 06F numbers.

The A3 references are mostly 2.0s on 06F numbers: 0261 S02 014, 0261 S02 029 and 0261 S02 046. The one A3 1.6, 0261 S02 379, sits among the 03C references, which is where the size would have sent you.

Taken in the right order, the questions shrink quickly. A Golf on its own could be any of fourteen references. A 2.0 Golf is one of two, and a 1.6 Golf one of ten, before the label has been read at all. The badge tells you where the car turns up in the table; the engine size tells you which part of the table to read.

Which car each MED9.5.10 reference is recorded on

Volkswagen accounts for most of the table. The two Golf 1.4 references are 0261 S02 004, printed with 03C 906 056 H, and 0261 S02 068, printed with 03C 906 056 AJ; both are recorded as FSI.

The ten Golf 1.6 references are 0261 S02 007, 0261 S02 070, 0261 S02 071, 0261 S02 072, 0261 S02 124, 0261 S02 149, 0261 S02 150, 0261 S02 179, 0261 S02 359 and 0261 S02 565. Each is printed in the table with its 03C vehicle-manufacturer number, and all except 0261 S02 124 are recorded as FSI.

The two Golf 2.0 references are 0261 S02 015 (06F 906 056 L) and 0261 S02 097 (06F 906 056 DE), both FSI. The second is also recorded on the Touran, and 0261 S02 013 (06F 906 056 N) is a Touran 2.0 FSI reference in its own right. 0261 S02 132 (06F 906 056 AM) is recorded on the Passat 2.0 FSI. A Volkswagen unit that is not one of these may be among the Volkswagen engine control units outside this family.

Four references are recorded on the Audi A3. 0261 S02 014 (06F 906 056 S) and 0261 S02 029 (06F 906 056 BT) are recorded as 2.0 FSI, 0261 S02 046 (06F 906 056 CG) as a 2.0, and 0261 S02 379 (03C 906 056 ED) as a 1.6 FSI. For an A3 or another Audi carrying a different unit, the Audi engine ECU pages are the next stop.

Four references are recorded on the Skoda Octavia, as many as on the A3. The two 1.6 FSI references are 0261 S02 188 (03C 906 056 CM) and 0261 S02 380 (03C 906 056 EB); the two 2.0 FSI references are 0261 S02 252 (06F 906 056 FA) and 0261 S02 260 (06F 906 056 ER). Octavia owners whose unit is not listed here can turn to our other Skoda engine ECU repairs.

A unit whose label matches nothing on this page is not ruled out. Start again from the make you drive, or send us the reference and we will confirm what it is.

Engine codes that confirm the size

Four engine codes are recorded against references on this page by at least two independent sources each. BKG is recorded against 0261 S02 004, a 1.4. BAG is recorded against 0261 S02 070 and BLF against 0261 S02 565, both 1.6s. BLX is recorded against 0261 S02 097, a 2.0.

All four sit where the size would put them: the 1.4 and 1.6 codes on 03C references, the 2.0 code on a 06F reference. That makes a known engine code a useful cross-check once the size and the label have done the work.

It is a cross-check and not a starting point. Each code is stated against one reference only, and codes that appear in a single listing are left out, so a code missing from this page says nothing about whether your unit is a MED9.5.10. No output figures are given for any of these engines.

How we repair a MED9.5.10 sent in by post

Units come to us by post from anywhere in the UK. On arrival each MED9.5.10 is logged and inspected, then tested electrically and taken through diagnostics specific to its fault, so the repair starts from a measured failure rather than from the symptoms reported with the car.

The work itself is done at component level, under a microscope and with temperature-controlled rework equipment, by our own engineers in our own UK workshop. The specific fault on the board is found and put right, rather than the unit being exchanged for another. No unit leaves until it has passed final testing.

When the diagnosis is done we contact you with the result, and the repair goes ahead only once you have authorised it. The work is covered by a 24-month warranty.

What we need from you follows the order of this page: the engine size first, then the ten-character Bosch number beginning 0261 S02, then the vehicle-manufacturer number beginning 03C or 06F with every trailing letter, and finally the car. Enter the engine size alongside both numbers on our Repair Form and we will match it to a reference before the unit is posted.

Each reference is listed below with its vehicle-manufacturer number.
