Bosch supplied the EDC15M to more than one manufacturer, so the same platform turns up under several different badges. On the VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda side it lands on a single engine: the 2.5 TDI V6, 150 hp. It is a diesel engine ECU, and we are able to test and rebuild these units in full.

That matters before you go any further, because this library carries pages for the family’s close relatives under other marques too: the Nissan EDC15M+ unit has a page of its own, and the Vauxhall EDC15M1 another. If the unit in your hand belongs to this family but the car is not a VAG diesel, nothing in the list below will match it, and one of those pages is where you want to be.

On the VAG side the picture tightens considerably. Every Bosch and OEM pairing on this page that can be traced independently comes back to the same engine: the 2.5 TDI V6 24-valve, 150 hp, built under engine codes AFB and AKN. One platform, several manufacturers, and on this list one engine.

The VAG number is where the car is. Its first three characters are the chassis: 4B0 is the A6 C5, 8D0 is the A4 B5, and 3B0 is the Passat B5. Ten of the twenty-one rows below carry one of those prefixes, so with the unit to hand you can place it yourself, without any tooling.

That plays out row by row. 0281001781 pairs with 4B0 907 401 A and 0281010154 with 4B0 907 401 AA; both are A6 units, as are 0281010148 with 4B0 907 401 S and 0281001833 with 4B0 907 401 E. 0281010156 pairs with 8D0 907 401 M, an A4 running the AFB engine, and 0281010147 with 3B0 907 401 J, which is the Passat. 0281010496, against 4B0 907 401 AE, is an AKN car at 150 hp.

Eleven of the rows carry a Bosch number and nothing beside it. That is not a gap you need to fill; the Bosch number on its own is enough for us to work from. One caution, though: the same Bosch hardware carried through successive VAG revisions, so a single Bosch number can turn up elsewhere against a different VAG suffix — give us the VAG number your own unit carries rather than one you have read in a listing.

There is a specific test on the A4 2.5 TDi with the AFB engine that is well established in the ECU repair trade. The engine ECU’s output at ECM pin 17D, the feed to the air-conditioning control module, should measure 38 Hz at idle and 150 Hz at 3,000 rpm. A reading away from those figures points back inside the ECU, and that internal fault is one we repair.

Two faults on this engine are usually not the ECU at all, and it is worth saying so before anything is posted. On the six-cylinder 2.5 TDi, an engine that cuts out and then will not restart most often comes back to the injection pump and a seal inside it. On the pre-PD VAG diesels more broadly, a drastic loss of power is more often pump collapse or an air-flow meter than anything in the electronics. Injection pumps are not work we take on.

What happens to a unit here does not vary. Each one is entered on our system when it lands, given a visual inspection, and then electrically tested. You then hear back with what the test showed and what the repair would take, and no work you have to pay for starts until you have agreed to it. The repair is made on your own board — the failed component identified and changed with temperature-controlled rework equipment, by our own engineers, in our own UK workshop, with nothing sent elsewhere. A final test is the last stage, and the unit has to pass it before it goes back. The repair carries our 24-month warranty.
