A Vauxhall Multec that got wet and then appeared to recover has not recovered. It has dried on the surface. What water leaves behind carries on working long after the board feels dry to the touch, and it does that work underneath the protective coating, where none of it is visible.

That is what catches people out. Corrosion on a circuit board is not something that happens while the water is present and stops when it dries. It is electrochemical and progressive: the residue left behind is hygroscopic, drawing moisture back out of the air, and mildly conductive, so a damp, faintly current-carrying film stays on tracks and joints meant to be dry and isolated. It continues at ordinary humidity, with no further leak needed.

Getting water into an engine ECU rarely takes anything dramatic. These are commonly mounted in or near the scuttle and bulkhead area, where rainwater is collected and channelled away, so a blocked drain, a perished grommet, a hardened seal or a screen-wash or heater leak can be enough to let damp reach the case. A car left standing damp does it slowly, as does condensation forming inside a cool metal case.

Symptoms from ingress damage are wide-ranging and inconsistent, and that inconsistency is itself a clue. A corroded track is not a clean break; it has been thinned and contaminated, so it behaves as a resistance that changes with damp, with vibration, with the board flexing as the car moves. The circuit works, then partly works, then works again. An affected Multec can throw unrelated fault codes, drive acceptably on one journey and badly on the next, then decline to reproduce the fault on demand.

That is also why drying a unit out, or a quick clean, is not a repair. Drying removes the free water and can restore function for a while, which is precisely the problem: it reads like a fix. The corrosion products are still there, still pulling moisture back, still working into copper tracks, plated through-holes, solder joints and component legs, and the same faults return — usually worse, often somewhere else on the board.

The conformal coating over the board complicates this rather than solving it. It keeps moisture off the circuitry until it is breached — at an edge, or where it was applied thin — and after that it seals the contamination in against the board and hides what follows. A board can look sound through its coating while corrosion travels along a track beneath it.

A lasting repair has to go further than drying and wiping. The coating comes off the affected area and the board is cleaned properly, so the corrosion products are removed rather than sealed back in. It is then examined under magnification to establish how far the damage has travelled, which is usually further than the staining suggests, because contamination wicks along tracks and into plated holes. Damaged tracks are repaired or re-run, affected joints re-terminated and components whose legs or packages have been attacked replaced, all of it under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment, before the board is re-protected.
