An ML4.1 rarely fails as a whole. It fails one function at a time, and which function has gone is the most useful piece of information you have. No spark at all, injectors that never pulse, and a group of sensors that all begin reading implausibly on the same day are three different circuits inside the same case — and the symptom in front of you narrows it to one of them before the lid ever comes off.
Loss of ignition control is the most clear-cut of the three. The engine cranks strongly, the fuel side behaves normally, and there is no spark whatsoever. That total absence is the significant part: the stage inside the ECU that switches the ignition coil has stopped switching, so the timing information arriving from the engine is processed and then goes nowhere. A single cylinder misbehaving on its own points further down the ignition, not at the unit.
Loss of injector control produces a similar refusal to start from an entirely different circuit. Here there is spark, the pump primes and fuel pressure is correct — but the injectors are not being pulsed. The ECU decides when each injector opens and drives it electrically, and when that output stage fails the fuelling command never reaches the injector at all. Good spark and good fuel supply, and still no fire, is the signature.
The third documented failure on these units is the one that causes the most wasted work. The ECU generates a regulated 5-volt supply and feeds it out to the sensors that need a reference to measure against. Those sensors do not report an absolute value; they return a proportion of the voltage they have been given. If that supply sags, becomes unstable or collapses, every sensor referenced to it starts reporting a wrong figure at the same moment, through no fault of its own.
That is why these cars end up having parts thrown at them. A scan shows several implausible readings at once, the sensors are replaced one after another, and each new sensor reads just as badly as the one it replaced — because the sensor was never wrong. One supply inside the ECU was. Several sensors going out together on an ML4.1 is far more often a single internal fault than a coincidence of external ones.
Establishing which of the three has failed is where our repair starts. One output missing while everything else behaves points at the driver stage for that output; several inputs going implausible together points at what they share. Each unit is logged, inspected under magnification and electrically tested on arrival, then taken through fault-specific diagnostics, with board-level work carried out under a microscope using temperature-controlled rework equipment. The failed stage or supply is renewed and the unit is not signed off until it passes final testing.
Because it is your own ECU that comes back rather than a replacement, whatever coding and pairing it already holds with the vehicle stays exactly as it is, and there is nothing to programme in or match up.
