On this page, a Lucas EPIC family means the first five digits of a Lucas number, and a unit means those digits together with any letter that follows them. The distinction matters because almost everything you can learn about your ECU points to a family, while only the letter, or the lack of one, points to the unit.

The cars recorded against the three documented families are the Peugeot 406 and the Citroën Xantia, with the 2.1 turbo diesel engine (2.1 TD). The labels on record read “Lucas DCU” and carry the code XUDLC01 beside a Lucas reference beginning R 040100, so those are the markings to look for on yours.

Three Lucas EPIC families, and what places your ECU in one

Three families in our table have a Peugeot or Citroën car on record: 80708, 80738 and 80768. Each is printed with its own Peugeot-Citroën number beginning 96. The 80708 numbers carry 96 274 538 80, the 80738 numbers 96 305 092 80, and the 80768 numbers 96 304 669 80.

The car narrows the search to two families, not one. The Peugeot 406 is on record against 80708 and 80768, and the Citroën Xantia against 80708 and 80738. The family the two cars share is 80708, so knowing only that your ECU came from a 406 or a Xantia still leaves two families open.

Engine size does not separate them. The 2.1 TD is on record across all three families, so it tells you that you are on the right page and nothing more.

The 96 number is the firmest of these checks, because each family has its own. It still confirms the family rather than the row. Every suffix within a family is printed with the same 96 number, so an 80708 A and an 80708 B carry identical ones.

The letter after a Lucas EPIC number decides the unit

Our table lists these units by Lucas number only, with the OEM column left blank. Within a family, the letter is what separates one row from the next: 80708, 80708 A and 80708 B are separate rows, and so are 80768, 80768 A, 80768 B and 80768 D.

Treat the letter as part of the number. Copy it exactly, and note just as carefully when there is none, because a number reading 80708 with nothing after it is not the same row as 80708 A. Sellers print the letter with or without a space, as 80708A or 80708 A, and both forms refer to the same unit.

The R 040100 reference often carries a letter of its own. Send us both numbers as printed, but keep each letter with its own number: the one we match against our table is the letter after the five Lucas digits.

If the letter is worn or hard to read, say so on the form instead of choosing one. A blank we know about is more useful to us than a letter that might be wrong.

Lucas EPIC numbers in our table with no car on record

Some numbers in our table have no car on record: 80555, 80641 B, 80641 D, 80641 F and 80758. We have no 96 number recorded against them either, so for these the Lucas number, with any letter it has, carries the identification on its own.

Filling in the Repair Form for a Lucas EPIC ECU

Complete the Repair Form, five digits and letter together, then add the 96 number, the R 040100 reference and any other text on the label exactly as it appears. Name the car and its engine size, and describe the fault in a sentence or two. We receive units by post from anywhere in the UK, so there is no need to bring the car to us.
