A 2.0 petrol engine is consistent with this Bosch MP3.2 family, and there its usefulness stops, because every row in our table with a size on record is a 2.0. The car narrows the ten units to between one and three, and the Bosch number printed on the label makes the final match. The sections below take each step in turn, deal with the two rows that have no car on record, and end with what happens at our workshop.

Why a 2.0 confirms an MP3.2 but cannot choose one

Eight of the ten rows have an engine size on record, and all eight are a 2.0. The other two, 0261204654 and 0261204656, have no size on record. A blank size is missing information, not evidence of a different engine.

So the size is a sensible first check, and if your engine is not a 2.0, say so on the form. What it cannot do is separate one row from another.

How far the car narrows the MP3.2 table

The car is where the table starts to thin out. A Peugeot 406 is recorded on three rows: 0261200813, 0261204656 and 0261204839. A Citroën XM is recorded on two, 0261200219 and 0261200808, and a Citroën Xantia on two, 0261200218 and 0261200809.

The Peugeot 405 and 306 each lead to one row. The 405 shares 0261200218 with the Xantia, and the 306 appears only on 0261204062. For these two cars, the label should agree with the row the car points to; if it does not, go by the label and note the difference on the form.

Engine details take the 406 and Xantia only part of the way. For a 406, a turbo points first to 0261200813, the one row with a turbo on record; for a Xantia, a 16-valve points first to 0261200218, the one row recorded as a 16-valve. But a detail missing from a row is not a detail ruled out, and 0261204656 has no size on record at all. Car and engine together still leave the Bosch number to decide.

The two MP3.2 rows with no car on record

0261200803 and 0261204654 have no car recorded against them. That is a gap in the record rather than a sign that they fit nothing, but it does mean that starting from the car will never lead you to either of them.

0261200803 is recorded as a 2.0, in line with the rest of the family. 0261204654 has neither a car nor a size on record, so the Bosch number is the only thing that identifies it.

If the label on your unit carries either number, the label is your match, whatever car it was fitted to. Put the car on the form anyway, so it sits alongside the unit when we assess it.

Where MP3.2 numbers sit one digit apart

Every number in the table begins 0261, followed by 200 on six rows and 204 on four, and from there the closing digits tell the rows apart. Three pairs sit one digit apart: 0261200218 and 0261200219, 0261200808 and 0261200809, and 0261204654 and 0261204656.

Two of those pairs also cross a line between cars: 218 and 219 separate the 405 and Xantia from the XM, and 808 and 809 separate the XM from the Xantia. The third pair gives the car nothing to check against, because 654 has no car on record while 656 is a 406 row. If a digit is worn or scratched, tell us which one on the form instead of choosing the likelier ending.

Our table lists these units by Bosch number, but please send every number on the label, including any Peugeot or Citroën number, together with the car. The Bosch MP3.1 is a separate unit with its own numbers, so check the name printed on the label as well.
