A Peugeot 306 1.6, a Citroën Xsara Picasso 1.6 and a Citroën Saxo each appear on two of the six rows in our Bosch M7.4.4 table, and the Peugeot 106 appears on one. For three of those four cars, the model tells you which pair to look at, and the label tells you which unit of the pair you hold.

Every row also carries a Peugeot or Citroën part number beside the Bosch one, so there are two references on the label to check against the table. The sections below take each car in turn, then cover reading the label, what to send and how we repair the unit.

Peugeot 306 1.6: 0261206245 or 0261206861

Both units listed for the Peugeot 306 are recorded with the 1.6 petrol engine, so engine size will not separate them. Their Bosch numbers share the opening 0261206 and part company in the last three digits: 245 on one, 861 on the other.

The Peugeot number is the second way in. Our table prints 96 378 394 beside 0261206861 and 96 459 162 80 beside 0261206245. Bosch 0261206245 is also printed with 96 378 396 80, and a 306 unit labelled with that number is the same Bosch unit.

Side by side, 96 378 394 and 96 378 396 differ only in their last digit. On a 306 whose label carries a 96 378 number, that last digit is what separates the two units, so read it off the label itself rather than from a listing or an invoice.

Citroën Xsara Picasso 1.6: 0261206633 or 0261207318

The Xsara Picasso also has two rows, and both are again recorded with a 1.6 petrol engine. This pair is easier to tell apart. The Bosch numbers differ at the seventh digit, 0261206633 against 0261207318, and the Citroën numbers diverge straight after the 96: 96 378 395 against 96 484 834 80.

So one look at either number normally places an Xsara Picasso unit. Check the remaining digits all the same before filling in the form, because agreement at the start of a number is not a match.

Citroën Saxo and Peugeot 106: the row they share

Bosch 0261206246 is the only row here that names a Citroën and a Peugeot together: the Saxo and the 106. It carries 96 378 387 80, and no other row on this page names the 106. We give no engine size for it, because our records do not settle one.

The Saxo has a second row of its own, 0261206860, recorded with the 1.6 petrol engine and printed beside 96 378 393. Because no size is stated for 0261206246, a Saxo 1.6 does not rule that row out; on a Saxo, it is the label that separates the two.

A unit from a 106 should lead you to 0261206246. If yours reads something else, copy the label exactly onto the form and tell us the car it came from, so the mismatch is known before the unit is opened.

Reading the Peugeot or Citroën number on the label

Five of the Peugeot and Citroën numbers linked to these units begin 96 378, and they sit close together: 387 on the Saxo and 106 row, 393 on the Saxo 1.6, 394 and 396 on the 306, and 395 on the Xsara Picasso. A number a digit or two from yours can belong to a different car, so compare every digit, not just the opening ones.

Three cells in our table, 96 378 393, 96 378 394 and 96 378 395, are printed without the closing 80 you will usually find on the label. A label reading 96 378 395 80 matches the table’s 96 378 395, and the same holds for the other two.

Sellers list all six units as Bosch M7.4.4, and the label may show the name in its short form, M744. The name places the unit in the family; the two numbers identify which unit it is.

Filling in the form and posting the unit

Start with the Repair Form, pairing the car with the label: the Bosch number, the Peugeot or Citroën number, the model, its engine size if you know it and the fault you have noticed. Then post the unit to our workshop, wherever in the UK the car is.

Each unit is logged, inspected and tested electrically when it arrives, and our engineers then diagnose the fault you described. The repair is carried out in-house in our UK workshop at component level, under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment, so the fault itself is repaired rather than the whole unit being swapped.

We then send you our findings with a quote, and nothing chargeable goes ahead until you agree to it. The unit is returned only once it has passed final testing, and the repair carried out is covered by our 24-month warranty.
