A Bosch EDC16C3 that reaches us described only by its name could be any of the nine units in the table at the foot of this page. Each further detail takes rows away, and three details are enough to leave a single one.
Those details are the engine size, the car and the label, and they work best in that order. The sections below take them one at a time and say how many rows are still standing after each.
Engine size: from nine rows to four or five
All nine units run diesel engines, and in our records every one is recorded with either the 1.4 HDi or the 1.6 HDi. Four rows are 1.4 HDi units: 0281010390, 0281010707, 0281011089 and 0281011090. The other five are 1.6 HDi units: 0281011233, 0281011234, 0281011558, 0281012625 and 0281013331.
That makes engine size the most useful detail to start with, because on its own it removes four or five rows. It is normally on the car’s paperwork.
If the unit came to you on its own and the engine is unknown, skip this step. Nothing is lost; the label can do the whole job by itself, as the label section below shows.
The 1.4 HDi cars: two rows each
The four 1.4 HDi rows split evenly between two Peugeots. A 206 with the 1.4 HDi leaves 0281010707 and 0281011089; a 307 with the 1.4 HDi leaves 0281010390 and 0281011090.
That is as far as the car goes. Each model is recorded with both of its rows, so neither the 206 nor the 307 narrows its pair any further, and the label has to settle it.
One pair of neighbours runs across the two cars. 0281011089 belongs to the 206 and 0281011090 to the 307, and their Peugeot/Citroën numbers, 96 532 025 80 and 96 532 026 80, are consecutive as well. A single misread digit on a worn label moves the unit from one car to the other, so copy every digit exactly.
The 1.6 HDi cars: one row or two
The five 1.6 HDi rows sit across three cars. The Citroën Xsara Picasso 1.6 HDi has one row to itself, 0281011233, so for that car the second step ends the search.
It is also the only Citroën row on the page. The heading reads Citroen / Peugeot, but the other eight units in our table are recorded against Peugeots, so a Citroën owner whose car is not a Xsara Picasso 1.6 HDi should check the label before assuming the unit belongs here.
A Peugeot 307 1.6 HDi leaves two rows, 0281011234 and 0281013331. A Peugeot 407 1.6 HDi also leaves two, 0281011558 and 0281012625.
In each of those pairs, one unit often goes by a slightly different name. 0281013331 and 0281012625 are usually labelled EDC16C34 rather than EDC16C3, so if the case in front of you says EDC16C34 and carries one of those two Bosch numbers, you are on the right page. The name is a pointer at most; the Bosch number is what we match.
The label: the detail that settles every pair
Every unit in the table has a ten-digit Bosch number beginning 0281, and no number appears in more than one row. That is why the label settles every pair the car leaves, and why it can find the row on its own when nothing is known about the car.
Beside the Bosch number, the label may also carry a Peugeot/Citroën part number beginning 96 and ending 80. The table pairs each Bosch number with one of these, and when both numbers on your label match the same row, the identification is as firm as the case can make it.
0281011558 is the one to watch. Besides the 96 559 307 80 in its row, a second Peugeot/Citroën number, 96 569 746 80, is also seen on 0281011558 units. Either one beside that Bosch number points to the same 407 1.6 HDi row.
Copy the Xsara Picasso and 307 1.6 HDi numbers with the same care as the 1.4 pair above. 0281011233 and 0281011234 are also consecutive and belong to different cars, and here to different marques too.
If no number on your label matches a row, the unit most likely carries a different designation. Look through Peugeot’s engine ECUs, one designation per page, or Citroën’s engine ECU range as a whole; for any other car, start from the engine ECU repairs listed by vehicle maker.
What happens after the Repair Form
Start with the Repair Form, filled in as far as you can: the engine size, the car, every number on the label and a short description of the fault. Ours is a mail-in service covering the whole of the UK, so the unit then comes to us by post.
On arrival the unit is logged and inspected, then tested electrically before diagnostics aimed at the fault you described. Our own engineers carry out the repair in-house in our UK workshop, at component level under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment, working on the part that failed rather than exchanging the unit for another.
We then tell you what we found and quote for the repair, and nothing chargeable starts until you authorise it. The unit comes back only once it has passed final testing, with the specific repair carried out covered by our 24-month warranty.
Match your label against the nine rows below.
