Twelve Bosch EDC16C39 numbers are listed in the table at the foot of this page, and they arrive in two runs and a straggler. The first run is Fiat cars with the 1.9 JTD diesel, the second is the Fiat Ducato van, and the straggler is a single Stilo number printed last, out of sequence.

Car or van: the digits after 0281 decide the run

Every Bosch reference on this page starts with 0281, and the three digits after it divide the table without exception. All seven car rows continue 012. The five Ducato rows continue 014 (four of them) or 015 (the fifth).

So a Bosch number opening 0281012 goes with the cars, and 0281014 or 0281015 with the vans. If that disagrees with the vehicle, read the label again.

The Fiat number cannot do the same job: numbers beginning 552 and beginning 518 or 517 both appear on car rows, and the 518/517 group also covers every van.

The car run: Croma, Multipla, Doblo and Grande Punto

Six of the seven car rows sit together at the top of the table, in Bosch-number order, and all are recorded against the 1.9 JTD diesel. Bosch number first, Fiat number in brackets:

  • Fiat Croma 1.9 JTD: 0281012148 (55202700) and 0281012149 (55202701)
  • Fiat Multipla 1.9 JTD: 0281012294 (51807822)
  • Fiat Doblo 1.9 JTD: 0281012864 (51798817) and 0281012865 (55206075)
  • Fiat Grande Punto 1.9 JTD: 0281012899 (51795844)

The Multipla and Grande Punto have one row each, so the model leads straight to a single pair.

The Croma and the Doblo each appear twice, so the model cannot choose between their rows. On the Croma both columns run in step, 0281012148 with 55202700 and 0281012149 with 55202701, so a worn final digit on either number can move you to the neighbouring row.

The Doblo pair differs: its Bosch numbers are consecutive, but its Fiat numbers are unrelated, one beginning 517 and the other 552, so the Fiat number tells its two rows apart more readily.

The van run: Ducato 2.3 and 3.0

The next five rows are all Fiat Ducato vans, and here the one detail every owner already knows, the engine size, narrows the choice at once:

  • Ducato 2.3: 0281014209 (51824236) and 0281014210 (51799351)
  • Ducato 3.0: 0281014211 (51822926), 0281014734 (51830255) and 0281015577 (51833925)

A 2.3 leaves two rows and a 3.0 leaves three; the label picks between them. Take care at the join: 0281014210 is a 2.3 row and 0281014211 a 3.0, so a misread last digit there puts a unit on the wrong engine size.

The Stilo row printed at the foot of the table

The twelfth row breaks the order. 0281012862, paired with Fiat number 55204761, is recorded against the Fiat Stilo 1.9 JTD. By its Bosch number it belongs in the car run, between the Multipla’s 0281012294 and the Doblo’s 0281012864, but our table prints it last, after the vans.

Reading down the car rows in number order, you pass its place without seeing it. If you have a Stilo, or a 0281012 number missing from the first six rows, check the bottom of the table.

The car-or-van check still holds, since the number opens 0281012. It also differs from the first Doblo row only in the final digit, 2 against 4: another reason to copy the whole number.

Reading an EDC16C39 label: two numbers, one row

Every row in this table carries a Bosch number and a Fiat number, and each of the twelve pairings turns up in between nine and eighteen separate sources we checked. The label on your unit should give you two numbers that land on the same row.

The Bosch number is ten digits beginning 0281; the Fiat number is eight digits. A label may print the Bosch digits in spaced groups where our table runs them together, so match the digits and disregard the spacing.

If one number matches a row and the other does not, say so in your enquiry rather than choosing a row yourself.

Your EDC16C39 on our bench, step by step

No part of the repair is outsourced: it is done in our own UK workshop, by our own engineers, on our own equipment, in this order:

  1. We book the unit in against the numbers and vehicle details you supplied.
  2. It is examined by eye, tested electrically, then diagnosed against the fault you described.
  3. We report what we found and what the repair involves; no chargeable work starts until you give the go-ahead.
  4. Failed components are repaired on the board under a microscope, using temperature-controlled rework equipment.
  5. The unit must pass final testing before it is packed, and you receive back the same ECU you sent, with a 24-month warranty on the repair.

The service runs by post from anywhere in the UK. Once you have both numbers, say whether it came from a car or a van on the Repair Form, and add the engine size and what the vehicle was doing when the fault showed.

A case marked with a different designation belongs on another page; start from our Fiat engine ECU pages, car and van alike. For a unit from a vehicle maker other than Fiat, go back to engine ECU repair in general.

The full EDC16C39 table follows, in the order described above, with the Stilo row at the bottom.
