There is a rule of thumb for the two Bosch ME9.2 references on this page: 0 261 209 005 for the E46 318i, 0 261 209 007 for the E46 316i and 316ti. It holds for most of the units recorded, and it breaks in both directions.

Both references belong to the N42, BMW’s four-cylinder petrol engine, in the E46 3 Series, so the cars involved are close relatives. The sections below cover where the rule comes from, where it fails, the extra BMW numbers either unit can carry, and how we repair the DME once it arrives.

Where the rule of thumb comes from

In the E46 cars recorded against these two units, the N42 comes in two sizes: 2.0 litres in the 318i, and 1.8 litres in the 316i and 316ti. Each ME9.2 reference turns up mostly in one of those two sizes.

0 261 209 005, which our table pairs with BMW 7 512 354, is recorded mostly in the 318i. 0 261 209 007, paired in the table with BMW 7 508 292, is recorded mostly in the 316i and 316ti.

Read that way, the engine size looks like enough to tell the two units apart. A 2.0 would mean the 005 and a 1.8 the 007, with no need to take the DME out and look.

How the rule breaks both ways

It is not enough, because neither reference keeps to its own size. The 1.8-litre 316 cars, the 316ti among them, also appear in the record against 0 261 209 005. The 2.0-litre 318i also appears against 0 261 209 007.

So the crossover runs both ways, and the badge on the boot rules neither reference out. A 318i is more likely to carry the 005, and a 316i or 316ti the 007, but an answer drawn from the car is still a well-informed guess rather than an identification.

What settles it is the label on the unit’s case. The Bosch number printed there tells you which of the two you are holding, whichever of the three models it came from.

Spacing varies from one source to the next. Our table writes 0261 209 005, labels and listings may show 0 261 209 005, and some run all ten digits together; all three forms are the same number.

Extra BMW numbers on the label

The BMW DME number on the label will not always match our table. Both references have been recorded under further BMW numbers, and 0 261 209 005 has more of them than 0 261 209 007:

  • 0 261 209 005: 7 512 354 in our table, and also 7 519 592, 7 523 838 and 7 516 518
  • 0 261 209 007: 7 508 292 in our table, and also 7 513 965

Each of those extra numbers has been recorded against its Bosch reference by more than one independent source, so none is a one-off. Nothing in the record links any of them to one model, which is one more reason the car cannot stand in for the label.

Copy both numbers exactly as the case shows them, not from a parts listing or an old invoice. A BMW number missing from the list above is still worth sending; our engineers confirm coverage from the whole label.

If the Bosch number on your case is neither of these two, this page does not cover it. Look through our BMW DME coverage for the other references, or go to engine ECUs for every other make if the car is not a BMW.

Bosch ME9.2 ECU repair in our UK workshop

We work as a mail-in service for the whole of the UK, so the DME reaches us by post. From there it is handled in-house, by our own engineers in our own UK workshop and on our own equipment.

The unit is logged, inspected by eye and tested electrically, then taken through diagnostics aimed at the specific fault. We contact you with what we found and a quote, and no chargeable work begins until you give the go-ahead.

The repair itself is made at component level, under a microscope and with temperature-controlled rework equipment. The fault on the board is put right, and the DME you took out of your 316i, 316ti or 318i is the one that goes back in.

No unit leaves until it passes final testing, and the specific repair carried out is covered by a 24-month warranty.

Giving us the label details on the Repair Form

With the DME out of the car, open the Repair Form and check your label with us before posting: give the Bosch number, the BMW number and the model it came from. The model is useful context, but our engineers confirm the unit from the label.

The two ME9.2 references covered here are listed below, each with the BMW number our table pairs it with.
