Bosch ME 9.2.1 Engine ECU TestingType: Bosch Engine Management
Fits: BMW
Fuel: Petrol
Ref: ECUT322195

Note: This ECU may also fit other models.

Four BMW model lines, one V8 and one Bosch number meet on this page. The 545i, the 645Ci, the 745i and 745Li, and the X5 4.4i are all recorded with BMW’s N62 4.4-litre petrol engine, and the Bosch ME9.2.1 engine ECU documented for that engine carries the reference 0 261 209 010.

From that single point, the record branches out again. The same Bosch number has been recorded under four different BMW DME numbers, so an enquiry about this unit needs the BMW number from the label as well as the Bosch one. The sections below follow that shape: the cars that converge on the unit, the numbers that branch from it, and what happens once it reaches our workshop.

Four model lines, one N62 engine

The cars recorded against 0 261 209 010 come from four BMW ranges:

  • the 545i, in the E60 5 Series
  • the 645Ci and 645i, in the E63 6 Series, with the E64 also recorded
  • the 745i and 745Li, in the E65 and E66 7 Series
  • the X5 4.4i, in the E53 X5

What joins them is the engine: the N62, a 4.4-litre V8 petrol listed in engine-code form as N62B44. That is how four quite different BMWs can arrive here with the same Bosch reference on the case.

Listings do not always agree on the name. Some give the unit as ME9.2.1 and others use the family name ME9.2, but both are describing the same Bosch number, and the number is what we work from.

One Bosch number, four BMW numbers

Next to 0 261 209 010, the BMW DME number on the label has been recorded as any one of these four:

  • 7 540 550, the number our table pairs it with
  • 7 544 610
  • 7 540 510
  • 7 540 600

Each of the four has been recorded with this Bosch reference by several independent sources, so none of them is a stray. Our record does not tie any one of them to a particular model, which means the car cannot be used to work out which BMW number a given unit carries.

So the Bosch reference alone does not fully describe the unit you have. The BMW DME number is the other half of the description, and it belongs in the enquiry next to the Bosch number, not in place of it.

Reading the label before you enquire

Both numbers are printed on the label on the unit’s case. Our table writes the Bosch reference as 0261 209 010; on a label or in a listing it may appear as 0 261 209 010 or without any spaces, and all three are the same number.

Copy both numbers exactly as they appear, and take them from the case itself rather than from an invoice or a parts listing. If the print has faded, photographing the label in good light can make it easier to read.

A BMW number that is not one of the four above is still worth quoting. Our engineers confirm coverage from the whole label before anything is posted.

If the Bosch number itself is different, this page does not cover your unit; our BMW page sets out the Bosch references we repair for BMW. For a car from another manufacturer, begin at the manufacturer list.

Inside our workshop, from arrival to final test

We work as a mail-in service across the UK, so the DME reaches us by post. Every repair is carried out in-house by our own engineers, in our own UK workshop and on our own equipment.

When it arrives, the unit is logged and visually inspected, then electrically tested and put through fault-specific diagnostics. Once we know what has failed, we contact you with the outcome and a quote, and nothing chargeable is done until you authorise it.

The repair itself is made at component level, under a microscope and with temperature-controlled rework equipment. The part that has failed on the board is replaced and the original ME9.2.1 is kept, so the car gets back its own unit, with the same Bosch and BMW numbers on the label that you quoted to us.

No unit leaves until it has passed final testing. The specific repair carried out is then covered by a 24-month warranty.

Starting a Bosch ME9.2.1 repair enquiry

With the unit out of the car, open the Repair Form and enter the Bosch and BMW numbers together, then add the model it came from. That gives our engineers what they need to confirm the unit before you post it.

The Bosch reference on this page, with the BMW number our table pairs it with, is listed below.
