Read down the OEM column of the table below and one row does not match the rest: against Bosch 0261204834 it gives 98VW12A650BA, which is a Ford part number rather than a Volkswagen one.

That is not an error in the table. The same control unit is documented under a Volkswagen reference and under a Ford one, and somebody who takes one off a Volkswagen expecting the first and reads the second has found the same part under its other name, not the wrong part.

What follows is which vehicles each of the eleven Bosch numbers below is documented against, why a vehicle manufacturer’s reference is the weakest way to identify one of these, and which number to give us when you send one in.

Why one number on this page carries a Ford reference

Take 0261204834. A specialist’s catalogue entry for that one Bosch unit is headed with two vehicle manufacturers’ references at once — the Volkswagen 021906256S and the Ford 98VW12A650BA — and our own table records the Ford one.

Two further records reach the same unit from opposite ends. One describes the Bosch number as a direct match for the Ford Galaxy 2.8 i V6, taken from a car first registered in 1997. Another lists it against a VW Sharan 2.8 under the Volkswagen reference. Neither is wrong, and neither is a correction of the other.

The reason behind that is not something the published records set out, and it is not what matters here. What matters is observable: one control unit, two manufacturers’ references, both in circulation.

The same control unit, written down twice

0261204834 is not the only one. Three more of the units on this page are documented against a Volkswagen in one record and a Ford in another.

0261206013 is sold as a Sharan 2.8 part by one seller and as a Ford Galaxy part by two others, one of whom dates a unit to 1996. The 0261204265 and 0261204266 pair appears in two parts records as a Sharan 2.8 VR6 unit and in a third as a Ford Galaxy Mk1 computer. The 0261203664 and 0261203665 pair is listed as a Sharan 2.8 VR6 and turns up in one listing headed as a 1998 Ford Galaxy ECU set.

A reference from one manufacturer’s records will not be found in the other’s, so a search on the number printed on the case can return nothing at all — not because the part is unknown, but because it is filed under a name the search was not looking for. A garage with a Galaxy on the ramp and a Volkswagen reference in front of it can talk itself out of a unit that is correct.

Where one of these comes off a Galaxy rather than a Volkswagen, it makes no difference at this end — we repair Ford engine ECUs too.

The Bosch number is the one that holds still

Set the two sets of records side by side and the vehicle manufacturer’s reference is the part that changes; the Bosch number is the part that does not. The same ten-digit Bosch reference heads the Volkswagen entry and the Ford one, and it is the number printed on the unit itself.

That is why every application on this page is attributed to a Bosch number rather than to a vehicle manufacturer’s one: it is the only reference the two sets of records have in common.

So the reference worth writing down when a unit comes off a vehicle is the Bosch one. Quote that and there is nothing left to interpret: it reads the same in both sets of records, and it is the one on the label in front of you.

A hatchback, a van and two MPVs on one page

Eleven Bosch numbers are listed below under the M3.8.1 designation, and they are seven control units: four are documented as pairs, three stand alone. Here is what each is recorded against.

• VW Golf 2.8 VR6, the Golf III (1H), built between 1992 and 1996 with the AAA engine code — 0261203968 and 0261203969, against the Volkswagen reference 021 906 256.
• VW T4 Transporter 2.8 VR6 — 0261203970 and 0261203971, against 021 906 256 H; and, for the T4 (70/7D) of 1997 to 2000 with the AES engine code, 0261204888, against 021 906 256 AC.
• VW Sharan 2.8 VR6 — four of the seven. 0261203664 and 0261203665, which individual listings date to 1997 and 1998; 0261204265 and 0261204266, against 021 906 256 P; 0261204834; and 0261206013, against 021 906 256 AE.
• Ford Galaxy — 0261204265 and 0261204266, one record describing them as a Galaxy Mk1 unit; 0261204834, called a direct match for the Galaxy 2.8 i V6; 0261206013, listed against a Galaxy by two sellers, one dating a unit to 1996; and 0261203664 and 0261203665, one listing heading them a 1998 Galaxy ECU set.

A hatchback, a panel van, an MPV and another manufacturer’s MPV share almost nothing you can see from the outside. What they share is the engine sitting in front of the unit: every application recorded against these eleven numbers is a 2.8 petrol six. All seven units have a Volkswagen application on record, which is why they sit with the Volkswagen side of our engine ECU repair.

The table below is not a list of eleven parts. It is one engine’s control units, written down by two companies that each had their own way of naming them.

Repairing the board the car already has

Repair sidesteps the whole question. A unit that is repaired and returned goes back into the vehicle it came out of, carrying the reference it already carried, so there is no second name to reconcile and nothing to match.

The work happens in our own UK workshop, on our own equipment, and by engineers we employ. Every unit that arrives is identified, gone over by hand and then put on test, and no conclusion is drawn from any one of those on its own.

Where the fault is on the board, it is traced to the component that caused it and that component is replaced, leaving the rest of the assembly as it is. You hear what has been found, and what putting it right involves, before anything chargeable begins. The warranty on the repair runs to 24 months.

What we do not do is remapping, tuning files or chip work.
