Nine Magneti Marelli 8P numbers sit in our table, and between them they are on record from seven models: the Peugeot 106, 306, 405, 806 and Boxer, and the Citroën Xantia and Xsara. With a name shared across that many cars, 8P on its own says little about which unit is in your hand.

The rest of the label says a great deal more, provided it is read from the left and copied as printed. The sections below follow it in that order, from the characters before the P to the two after the dot, and then turn to the car and engine size as checks.

Reading a Magneti Marelli 8P label from the left

Our table prints each number as IAW, then 8P, a dot and two further characters, with one exception explained below. Sellers print the same number in several ways, so IAW 8P.20, IAW8P20 and IAW8P.20 all refer to one unit: the spaces and the dot come and go, while the characters stay the same.

The characters before the P count as well, because a 48P or 48P2 number belongs to a different family from 8P. So copy the start of the label as carefully as the end, and do not shorten it to the part you expect to see.

The leading zero on IAW 08P.22

One row in our table prints its number as IAW 08P.22, with a zero in front of the 8, and another lists IAW 8P.22 without one. Both appear in the table as separate rows.

Copy any leading zero exactly as your label prints it. If the zero is there, keep it; if it is not, do not add one. Tidying the number into the form you have seen elsewhere swaps what the label says for a guess.

IAW 08P.22 also has no car and no engine size on record in our table, so the Marelli number carries the identification on its own. IAW 8P.22, by contrast, is on record from the Peugeot 806 with the 2.0 engine.

With nothing on record to compare against, a misread character on an 08P.22 would go unnoticed on the form. Take the number straight off the unit’s own label, and still give us the car and its engine size.

The two characters after the dot on an 8P

The two characters after the dot name the unit. Across our 8P rows they are .10, .11, .13, .16, .1A, .20, .22 and .40, with .22 appearing on both the 8P and the 08P row.

Seven of those endings are two digits. The eighth, 8P.1A, is not: its second character is the letter A, and a 1A misread as 10 names a different row in our table. Copy both characters exactly, letter included.

That pair also shares a car and an engine size. The Peugeot 306 with the 1.8 is on record against both 8P.10 and 8P.1A, so for that car neither the model nor the engine size can separate them. The second character after the dot, a 0 or an A, does.

Digit-only endings need the same care. 8P.20 and 8P.22 differ in their last character alone, and both are on record with the 2.0.

What the car and engine size on record can confirm

With the label copied, the car and its engine size become a cross-check. The Peugeot 306 is on record against three numbers: 8P.10 and 8P.1A with the 1.8, and 8P.20 with the 2.0.

The Peugeot 106 is on record against 8P.16 with the 1.6, and against 8P.40 with no engine size recorded. The Citroën Xantia is on record against 8P.13 and 8P.20, the Peugeot 405 against 8P.13, and the Citroën Xsara against 8P.1A.

Three numbers are on record with the 2.0 engine: 8P.11 from the Peugeot Boxer, 8P.20, and 8P.22 from the Peugeot 806.

A car and size that agree with the record for your number back up what you copied. A mismatch does not rule the unit out. These records list the cars each number has been found in, not every car it can have been fitted to, and the note beside the spec lines at the top of this page says the same.

Peugeot and Citroën numbers beginning 96 on an 8P label

An 8P label can also carry a Peugeot or Citroën number beginning 96. The label on an 8P.1A, for example, carries 96 295 654 80. Our table lists these units by Marelli number only, so it is the Marelli number that finds your row here, with the 96 number as a second reference beside it.

A label can carry more than one 96 number. Send every number printed on it, including any you are unsure of; sorting out which one matters is our job, not yours.

From the Repair Form to a repaired Magneti Marelli 8P

Copy the label onto the Repair Form, from its first character to its last, then add the car, its engine size and a line on what the fault does. We work by post, for customers throughout the UK.

Once your 8P is with us, it is logged, inspected and tested electrically, then taken through diagnostics aimed at the fault you described. Our own engineers carry this out in our own UK workshop, on our own equipment. We tell you what we have found, and no chargeable work starts until you give the go-ahead.

The fault is repaired at component level on the 8P you posted, under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment. Before it comes back to you, the unit has to pass final testing, and the repair carries our 24-month warranty.
