No Spark From the DME: Testing and Repairing a BMW E30 325i Bosch 0 261 200 164

Bosch DME M 1.1 Engine ECU RepairsThe owner of this BMW E30 325i did not post his engine ECU to us for a repair. He posted it for an answer. The car would not start, and he could not tell whether its Bosch DME M1.1, part number 0 261 200 164, was the cause of the fault or had nothing to do with it.

What the owner needed to know

This 325i is the E30, with BMW’s M20 2.5-litre six-cylinder engine. Its engine management is Bosch Motronic M1.1, known on BMWs as the DME M1.1, and our page on the M1.1 behind this job covers the unit family as a whole.

A car that will not start leaves two possibilities that look identical from the driver’s seat: a fault inside the DME, or a fault somewhere else in the car. So the unit came to us for ECU Testing + Reporting. The instruction was to test it and say whether the fault was inside it, before anyone decided on a repair.

The finding: no spark output from the DME

Like every unit that arrives here, it was logged, visually inspected and electrically tested before fault-specific diagnostics began. The answer came out of that testing plainly. The ECU was not sending an output signal for spark.

Without that signal there is nothing to fire the ignition, and an engine that cannot fire will not start. The finding matched the owner’s fault exactly, and it placed the cause inside the DME rather than elsewhere on the car.

The report went to the owner before any repair work began. We told him there was no spark output from the ECU, and he gave us the go-ahead to repair it.

The repair was carried out in our own UK workshop by our own engineers, at component level: the aim is to put right the specific failed part, so the original DME goes back into the car rather than a substitute. It was then re-tested and confirmed fully functional before being returned to the owner.

Why the test came before the repair

The order this job ran in (test, report, decision, repair) suits a non-starting 325i particularly well. On the E30, a no-spark, no-start fault often starts outside the DME: a crank position sensor, the main relay or a wiring fault can each stop the engine from firing while the ECU itself is healthy.

That is the value of a report. On this car the fault was inside the unit. On another E30 the same symptom could point elsewhere, and a report says so before any work is done on a DME that did not need it.

Fitting a different DME in the hope that it cures the car is no shortcut either. Motronic versions are not interchangeable, so a unit from a different version will not stand in for the M1.1; the DME has to match the car. Repairing the original keeps the correct unit where it belongs.

The M1.1 is a DME we see regularly. These units commonly suffer with water damage, and we have a very high success rate in repairing them.

Checking the DME in your own 325i

The label is the place to start. If it reads 0 261 200 164, which also appears written as 0261200164, your unit is the same DME M1.1 as the one in this job. For other BMW DME and DDE units, go to our BMW page; non-BMW engine ECUs are covered from our main engine ECU repair page.

Units are posted to us from anywhere in the UK. Each one is tested and diagnosed, and we contact you with the outcome and a quote; no chargeable work begins without your authorisation. Repairs we carry out are covered by a 24-month warranty on the work done.

Contact us for a quote via the Repair Form. Fill it in first to ask for a test and report on your DME, and give the label number and a short account of what the car does: whether it cranks without firing, and anything already checked on the car. Then post the unit.
