Ten Bosch part numbers are listed on this page, and they are not ten separate control units. They are one run of Bosch engine management hardware, made for Volkswagen across a handful of model years and split into separate references because the cars underneath them were not the same as one another.

This page sets out what those separate references are recording, what it means for a repair when one of these boards needs work, and which cars each of the ten numbers is documented against. These are petrol engine control units, and the repair is carried out on the original board.

What the ten part numbers on this page are recording

A part number on a Bosch control unit records the exact specification a vehicle manufacturer ordered. It does not announce a different design. Where Volkswagen wanted a unit set up for a different engine, or for a different arrangement of sensors and outputs, Bosch issued that specification a reference of its own — and the ten on this page are ten of those. What they share is the system they are all filed under: Bosch Motronic 2.9.

The plainest evidence for that is on the table below. Every number on it with a documented vehicle behind it belongs to a six-cylinder VR6 car — the Golf VR6 or the Corrado — with one exception. That exception is 0261203373, which is documented against the Golf ABA 2.0 built between 1994 and 1996: a four-cylinder engine, in a different car, filed under the same Motronic 2.9 designation as the rest.

So the designation is not the name of an engine, and it does not describe what the car is. It names a construction — a board of a particular generation, laid out and assembled in a particular way — issued under as many part numbers as there were vehicle specifications to serve.

Why that matters when one of these boards needs work

The differences between the ten numbers are the differences that decide which unit a particular car will accept. That is a fitment question, settled by the reference printed on the label, and it is worth keeping separate from the other one.

The other one is what a repair on one of these units involves, and the catalogue differences have almost no bearing on it. A repair is governed by how the board is built: how it is laid out, how its components are mounted, how its outputs are arranged. That is precisely what these ten references have in common rather than what divides them.

The practical consequence is worth stating plainly. A workshop that has opened one of these boards, found what had failed on it and put it back into service has the measure of the whole run. The next one on the bench under a different number is the same piece of engineering, built for a different car.

It is also why a number with nothing published against it is not a problem to work on. The vehicle application tells you where a unit came from; it is the board in front of you that tells you what has to be done to it.

What is actually done to the board

The work happens here. Our own engineers repair every unit, in our own UK workshop, on our own equipment; none of it goes out to a third party at any stage.

A unit that arrives is booked in, examined and put under power before anything is said about it. From there the work is component-level: the part of the board that has given up is identified and renewed, under a microscope, with rework equipment matched to the way a board of this construction was assembled. The unit that goes back is the one that came off the car.

We do not write tuning files, remap, clone or remove immobilisers from these units. The service is a repair on the board you send, and there is nothing else attached to it.

• 0261203116 and 0261203117, VAG reference 021 906 258 AF — the Golf VR6 2.8 of 1992 to 1993.
• 0261203373, VAG reference 037 907 258 H — the Golf ABA 2.0 of 1994 to 1996, a four-cylinder rather than a VR6.

0261203044 and 0261203045 sit on the same table and are repaired in the same way as the rest. We have no vehicle application for either that we would be willing to print, so this page does not give one.

Every application documented against these numbers is a Volkswagen, which is why the unit belongs with the Volkswagen engine control units we repair. A Bosch number that is not on the list may still be one of these boards, since the designation covers more references than have a car recorded against them. If it turns out not to be an M2.9 at all, there is a breakdown by vehicle make.

Getting a unit to us

Nothing about this needs the car. The unit travels on its own, from any address in the UK, and goes back the same way.

Once it has been tested, the findings come back to you with what the repair would take, and nothing chargeable starts until you have agreed to it. Whatever is put right on the board comes with a 24-month warranty behind it.
