Eight valves or sixteen is the first detail to settle when a Bosch M1.3 has come out of a Peugeot 405. The table at the foot of this page lists three petrol units, 0261200160, 0261200162 and 0261200355, and the 405 is recorded against two of them, split by the valve count of its engine.

The Citroën BX and ZX are simpler, with one row each, while the Peugeot 205 GTi is the car where the engine gives no answer and the label has to. Each car’s route to its row follows, then what to send and how we repair the unit.

Eight valves or sixteen on a Peugeot 405

The Peugeot 405 appears against 0261200160 with the 1.9-litre 8-valve petrol engine, and against 0261200355 with a 16-valve petrol engine. It is the only car on this page that the valve count sorts.

So an 8-valve 405 should lead you to 0261200160 and a 16-valve 405 to 0261200355. We give no engine size for the 16-valve unit, because the records we checked do not agree on one; the valve count is the detail they share.

Take that as the answer to expect, not the final one. The Bosch number on the label decides; the valve count tells you whether the label and the car agree.

The Citroën BX and ZX each lead to one row

Each Citroën is recorded against a single unit. The ZX appears with 0261200160, the same unit as the 8-valve 405, and the BX appears with 0261200162, recorded with a 1.9-litre petrol engine.

The two Citroëns share no row, so the model name gives a firm expectation. If a unit from a ZX carries 0261200162, or one from a BX carries 0261200160, read the label again and mention the mismatch on the form.

The 205 GTi, which the engine question cannot settle

The Peugeot 205 GTi is recorded against two units, 0261200160 and 0261200162, both with the 1.9-litre petrol engine. On this car, neither the model name nor the engine size separates them.

The valve count does not help here either. It is recorded as 8-valve for 0261200160, but our records do not settle one for 0261200162, so we would not use it to rule either unit in or out.

That leaves the label. The two numbers differ only in their last digit, 0 against 2, so check that digit carefully on a worn or dirty unit before you fill in the form.

Reading the label, and the second number you may find

Read the Bosch number off the unit and send it to us; each row of our table is listed by it. The OEM column beside all three rows is blank, so there is no Peugeot or Citroën number in the table for yours to be compared with.

Your unit may still carry one, and it is useful support. We have also seen 96 027 112 80 alongside 0261200160 and 96 012 928 80 alongside 0261200162; if your label shows either, include it with the Bosch number. Another Peugeot or Citroën number is worth sending too.

All three units are also listed under the name Motronic 1.3, the longer form of M1.3. Bosch 0261200354, one digit away from 0261200355, is not one of the three; it is covered on our M1.3.1 page.

If your label reads none of these numbers, try Peugeot engine ECUs beyond the M1.3 or the Citroën engine ECUs we repair; for a car from any other maker, use engine ECU repairs for other manufacturers.

What happens after you post it

Begin with the Repair Form, valve count included: the Bosch number, any Peugeot or Citroën number, the car, whether its engine is 8-valve or 16-valve if you know, and the fault you have seen. Units reach our workshop by post, whichever part of the UK they start from.

On arrival we log the unit, inspect it and test it electrically, then our engineers trace the fault you reported. They repair it in-house in our UK workshop, at component level, under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment, fixing the part that failed and leaving the rest of the unit as it was.

You then get our findings and a quote, and nothing chargeable starts until you agree to it. The unit comes back only after passing final testing, and the repair carried out is covered by our 24-month warranty.

The three Bosch numbers covered above are set out below.
