Six of the seven Bosch DME M1.7.2 references in our table split between two BMW engines, and the 318i badge turns up on both sides of the split. Three belong to the 8-valve M43 four-cylinder and three to the 16-valve M42; the seventh is recorded against the E36 without an engine attached. Knowing the car is a 318i narrows the search, but it does not finish it.

Which engine each M1.7.2 row belongs to

Both engines are BMW four-cylinders. The plainest difference between them is the valve count, 8 on the M43 and 16 on the M42, and Bosch’s M1.7.2 DME was fitted to both.

On the M43 side are 0 261 203 276 with BMW number 1739134, documented against the E36 316i; 0 261 203 277 with 1743247, against the E36 318i; and 0 261 203 280 with 1743249, against the E34 518i.

On the M42 side are 0 261 203 281 with 1247102, documented against the E36 318is; 0 261 203 282 with 1743251, against the E36 318i, 318is and 318ti; and 0 261 203 590 with 1743250, against the 318is.

Why a 318i badge leaves two candidates

The E36 318i is documented against 0 261 203 277 among the M43 rows and against 0 261 203 282 among the M42 rows. A car described only as a 318i could therefore carry either unit, and the two were built for different engines.

The label on the DME case resolves it. It carries a Bosch number and a BMW number, and quoted together, exactly as printed, they point to a single row. If you know whether the engine is the 8-valve or 16-valve version, tell us, but treat that as a cross-check; the label is what identifies the unit.

The 318is and 318ti: in the table, not the spec lines

The Fits line at the top of this page names the 316i, 318i and 518i. The table goes two cars further. The 318is is documented against all three M42 rows, and the 318ti against 0 261 203 282.

Both are E36 models, and neither is documented against an M43 row. If your car is one of them, you are on the right page; the Note line under the spec block allows for exactly this.

The E34 518i: the only 5 Series here

Every other car named on this page is an E36 3 Series. The 518i is the single E34, and its row, 0 261 203 280 with BMW number 1743249, sits among the M43 references.

So a 518i owner is spared the 318i’s question of which engine family to look in.

The row that is not tied to a model

One reference, 0 261 203 278 with BMW number 1247519, is recorded against the E36, but the sources we checked do not tie it reliably to a particular model or to either engine. We have not placed it on one side of the table or the other.

The pairing of those two numbers is well documented, so if they are the ones on your case, the unit belongs here. Send the unit in under both numbers; our technical team confirms coverage for the specific unit rather than inferring it from the car.

What happens when the DME reaches our workshop

Each unit is repaired in-house by our own engineers, in our own UK workshop and on our own equipment. On arrival it is logged and inspected, then tested electrically and taken through diagnostics aimed at the fault you have reported.

Once the cause is found, we contact you with the outcome and a quote, and no chargeable work begins until you approve it. The repair is made at component level, under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment, on the parts of the board that have failed rather than by swapping the whole DME.

A repair is not complete until the unit passes final testing, and the specific repair is covered by our 24-month warranty. We work by post across the UK, so before the parcel is packed, fill in the Repair Form with the label in front of you, adding the badge on the car and a line on how it behaves.

If the label shows a designation other than M1.7.2, go back up to BMW and look for that unit there; for another make altogether, start from the main engine ECU page.

Below, all seven Bosch numbers appear beside the BMW number that belongs to each; check both against your case before it goes in the post.
