The table at the foot of this page has a column for the Bosch number and a column for the OEM number, and none for the car. That missing column is the one most people arrive here needing, so this page fills it in for each of the five Bosch EDC15C4 units we list, then shows where the car stops being enough to pick a row.
The column our EDC15C4 table leaves out
Four of the five rows belong to one engine, the BMW M57 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel. It went into four BMW models, the 330d, 530d, 730d and X5 3.0d, so for those rows the car column fills with the same few names, repeated. The fifth row fills with a car the spec lines above never mention: a MINI One D.
Filling it in for the four BMW rows
Here is the car column for the BMW rows, as our records have it.
- 0281 001 830, OEM 7 785 540: E39 530d and E53 X5 3.0d, with the E38 730d on fewer records
- 0281 010 144, no OEM number: E46 330d and E39 530d
- 0281 010 314, OEM 13 61 7786 581: E39 530d, E46 330d and X5 3.0d
- 0281 011 257, OEM 7 790 220: E53 X5 3.0d
The OEM numbers on the 830, 314 and 257 rows are each confirmed against the Bosch number beside them in independent records. The 144 row has no OEM number in our table, and we have left that cell empty rather than fill it with a number we have not confirmed. It also has the least vehicle evidence of the four, so its car column is a pointer, not a finding.
Why the car on its own does not choose a row
Turn to the car first and the overlaps show. A 530d appears on three rows: 830, 144 and 314. An X5 3.0d also appears on three: 830, 314 and 257. A 330d appears on two, 144 and 314. The 730d is the only BMW model here recorded against a single row, 830, and on fewer records than the rest, so even that is not settled.
The engine accounts for it. The same M57 3.0 sits in all four models, and the records do not divide its units one per model. Knowing the car takes five rows down to three at most. The label on the case takes you the rest of the way, which is why we ask for its numbers rather than the model name alone.
The fifth row: a MINI One D
Bosch number 0281 011 085 is not from a BMW-badged car, and it is not from a 3.0. Our records place it in the MINI One D of the R50 generation, with a 1.4 diesel engine. The Fits line at the top of this page reads BMW Various Models and gives no hint of it, so a MINI owner could fairly assume the page is not for them.
What it shares with the other four rows is the EDC15C4 name. The engine is different, the car is different, and the number in its OEM column works differently too, which the next section covers.
When the label and the OEM column disagree
Beside 0281 011 085 our table gives 7 791 547, which is the catalogue number for the unit. The label on the case of these units commonly shows a different number. That is expected. It does not mean the unit is wrong for this page or that the table is wrong for the unit.
So quote the label exactly as it is printed, alongside the Bosch number, and do not substitute the number from our table. The same habit serves every row: copy both numbers from the case, and if the OEM number on yours is not one we list, send it unchanged. On the 144 row, where our table holds no OEM number, the Bosch number and the car carry the identification between them.
What happens to an EDC15C4 once it is with us
Each unit is logged against the numbers and the car you give us, inspected, and tested electrically before diagnosis of the reported fault begins. All of it happens in our own UK workshop, carried out by our own engineers on our own equipment; nothing is sent elsewhere.
We then tell you what we found and what the repair involves, with a quote, and nothing chargeable starts until you approve it. Faulty components are traced and renewed at board level, under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment, and the repair is not finished until the unit passes a final test. The ECU that comes back is the one you sent, with a 24-month warranty on the repair.
We work by post from anywhere in the UK. Note the Bosch number, the OEM number as your label prints it, the car and its engine, and how the engine has been behaving, then write the car beside the numbers on the Repair Form.
For a BMW engine ECU that is not an EDC15C4, try the BMW heading on our site. For a make not mentioned on this page, start from our full list of engine ECU repairs.
Below are the five rows in the order our table keeps them, Bosch number first and OEM number second, with the 144 cell left blank.
