Sellers do not agree on what to call this control unit. Some list it as a Bosch ML6.1.4, others as a Digifant II, and a search on one of those names can miss every listing that uses the other.

The part numbers do not change with the name a seller chooses. This page covers the unit carrying Bosch number 0 261 200 298 and Volkswagen number 037 906 022 DB, recorded on the Volkswagen Golf 1.8 and in particular the GTI. Those numbers, read from the case, are what we work from.

Two names on the listings, one pair of numbers

Independent listings split on the name. Some sellers list this unit as an ML6.1.4 and others as a Digifant II, and both names appear beside the same Bosch number, 0 261 200 298.

This page does not try to settle which name is correct. Nothing in the independent record explains the difference, and the repair starts from the unit on the bench, not from the name on its listing. Where the name does matter is in searching: a catalogue entry under one name may not surface in a search for the other.

The numbers make the better search terms. Listings print them both spaced and run together, as 0 261 200 298 and 0261200298, and as 037 906 022 DB and 037906022DB, so search on both forms. The Bosch number is there whichever name the seller has used, which makes it the steadiest place to begin.

Reading the numbers off the case

The label on the case carries both references this page is built on. 0 261 200 298 is Bosch’s own reference and 037 906 022 DB is the Volkswagen part number recorded with it; independent sellers list the two together.

Copy both straight from that label, every character included. Neither number, taken alone, is worth treating as the whole identification, which is why the table at the foot of this page shows them as a pair and why we ask you for both.

Listings also print 037 906 022 N alongside this Bosch number, so if that is what your label carries, quote it exactly as printed.

A unit whose numbers match neither of these is a different part, whatever its listing called it. It may still be one we repair: our engine ECU repair overview sets out the makes we cover, and our engineers can confirm coverage for a specific unit before you post it.

The Volkswagen Golf 1.8 this unit is recorded on

The independent record points mainly at one car. Nine independent sources name the Volkswagen Golf against 0 261 200 298, six name the GTI, and five give the engine as a 1.8. Two describe the engine as an 8v.

The Jetta appears as well, in two independent listings. That earns it a mention here, but if your unit came out of a Jetta, let the numbers on the case carry the identification rather than the car.

Like the other VAG pages in our part-number library, this one carries a Fits: line naming Audi, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen together. The records for this reference are narrower: the independent listings we checked agree on Volkswagen alone, and no Audi, Seat or Skoda application is recorded by two of them.

If the Volkswagen you are working on turns out to carry a different engine ECU, look for it through the Volkswagen engine ECU hub.

Repairing an ML6.1.4 at component level

Units reach our workshop by post, from anywhere in the UK. Each is logged on arrival, inspected by eye and checked electrically, and only then put through diagnostics specific to the fault reported.

The repair itself is done in-house by our own engineers, on our own equipment, under a microscope and with temperature-controlled rework tools. It is a component-level repair: the failed component is traced and repaired, rather than the whole unit being exchanged.

When diagnosis is finished we let you know what we found, and no repair begins until you have approved it. A unit leaves only after passing final testing, and the repair is covered by a 24-month warranty.

To begin, submit the unit’s details online using our Repair Form, with both numbers from the case label and the car the unit was taken from. If they do not match this page, we say so before you post the unit.

Our own listing for this unit is set out in the table below.
