The character that tells you which car a Bosch ME7.5.10 came off is the third one in the vehicle-manufacturer number. On the references listed at the foot of this page that character is either a 0 or a 6 — 030 906 032 or 036 906 032 — and every other digit in the base is identical. One of those bases is a Polo. The other is a Golf.

The Bosch number will not tell you this, and neither will the designation: all thirty-nine references below are ME7.5.10 units, so the name on the case separates nothing. Nor will the trailing letters, which run from no letter at all through to AM, BA, CG and DT, and which repeat across bases. The base is what sorts them.

What follows is how the thirty-nine divide, which cars the public record actually places under each base, and what to read off the unit before you quote a number to anyone.

The three base numbers, and what each one covers

There are three bases across the thirty-nine references, not two. Twenty-one carry 030 906 032. Twelve carry 036 906 032. The remaining six carry 6K0 906 032. Establish which one you are holding and you have cut the list to a third of its length or better.

  • 030 906 032 — twenty-one references. Volkswagen Polo and Lupo, and the Seat Arosa.
  • 036 906 032 — twelve references. Volkswagen Golf and Bora, the Skoda Octavia, and the Seat Leon.
  • 6K0 906 032 — six references. Seat Ibiza and Cordoba.

Every car named there is one that at least two independent suppliers place on those references. Where only a single record names a car, it is not named here.

030 906 032 — the Polo, Lupo and Arosa references

This is the largest of the three groups, and the cars under it are the smallest Volkswagens on the list. The Polo takes most of them: 030 906 032 BC and 030 906 032 CE are both documented against a 1.0 Polo, and BD and CM are each given as a 1.4 by three independent suppliers. The Lupo takes much of the remainder, including 030 906 032 DQ on a 1.4.

The base is not Volkswagen-only, and that is where it catches people out. The Seat Arosa appears on it repeatedly — 030 906 032 B and 030 906 032 DJ are both given as Arosa units by three or more independent suppliers — and 030 906 032 BG is listed by some as a Volkswagen Lupo and by others as a Seat Arosa. Same reference, two badges. Nothing about a 030 number rules a Seat out.

Engine size is the one specification the record agrees on across this group: every corroborated application is a 1.0 or a 1.4, and nothing larger appears at all. One reference here, 030 906 032 AD, turns up in a single record and nowhere else, so nothing is claimed for it beyond its place in the list.

Polo, Lupo and Golf units all come in under the Volkswagen work we take in, whichever base their reference carries.

036 906 032 — the Golf, Bora, Octavia and Leon references

Twelve references sit on 036 906 032, and where the record gives an engine size it is a 1.4 every time. The Golf is the anchor. 036 906 032 G and 036 906 032 L are each documented as Golf units by five independent suppliers; AM by four; AG and D by three; BA and P by two.

The badge is no more fixed here than on the 030. 036 906 032 B is documented against the Skoda Octavia by four suppliers — the only Skoda on the page, and the reference that belongs with our Skoda coverage. 036 906 032 H comes back as a Seat Leon on three. 036 906 032 E is given as a Seat Leon 1.4 by two suppliers and as a Volkswagen Golf by two more: one reference, two marques, both readings properly sourced. The bare 036 906 032, with no letter after it at all, comes back as a Golf or a Bora.

Two things follow from that. Engine size will not separate the two Volkswagen bases: a 1.4 sits on both. Neither will the badge: there are Seats on both and a Skoda on one. The base is the only part of the reference that partitions the list cleanly.

6K0 906 032 — the six Seat Ibiza and Cordoba references

The third base does not behave like the other two, and the record shows why. Where 030 and 036 collect cars from more than one marque, 6K0 collects only Seats — and only two of them. The suppliers listing these references identify the cars by their internal generation code, 6K, over and over; one parts catalogue states plainly that 6K0 906 032 AC is the engine control unit for the Seat Ibiza Mk II and the Cordoba of the same generation.

The six are C, J, Q, AC, AH and AJ. Q is placed on the Ibiza by four suppliers and C by three, and both are placed on the Cordoba by two. AH and AC are Ibiza references on five apiece; AH is a 1.0 and AC a 1.4. J is placed on a 6K Seat by three suppliers that do not agree on which of the two cars it is, so this page does not pick one.

That makes 6K0 the most useful of the three bases to read correctly. A reference opening 6K0 is a Seat, and you can put the other thirty-three references aside. Neither Volkswagen base will do that much for you on its own. Arosa, Ibiza, Cordoba and Leon units are all handled on the Seat side of what we repair.

Why the base digit is the character most easily lost

It sits mid-string in a nine-digit number, on a printed label that has spent its working life in an engine bay. It is also the only character in the base that moves: on all thirty-three of the 030 and 036 references, the leading 0 and the 906 032 behind it are identical.

The suffix letters make that worse rather than better, because they repeat across bases. 030 906 032 BA and 036 906 032 BA are both in the list below, against different Bosch references. The second is documented as a Volkswagen Golf 1.4 by two independent suppliers; the first sits on the base this page has just shown to be Polos, Lupos and Arosas. Read the BA, miss the digit, and there is nothing left in the reference to tell the two apart.

The Bosch ten-digit number is the safer of the two to quote — no two rows below share one, so it always resolves to a single unit. What it will not do is say which car the unit came off, and that is usually the part of the conversation that matters. Quote both, in full, trailing letters included, and if the label is damaged enough that you cannot read the base with confidence, say so rather than filling the gap in.

Sending a ME7.5.10 in for repair

We repair engine ECUs at component level, in our own UK workshop, on our own equipment. A ME7.5.10 is logged in, inspected, electrically tested, then taken through fault-specific diagnostics; board-level work is done under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment, and the unit is not finished until it has passed final testing.

Repairing the board rather than replacing it is the point of doing it this way. The ECU keeps the coding and the immobiliser relationship it already has with the car, so there is nothing to re-match at the other end. Every repair carries a 24-month warranty on the work carried out.

It is a mail-in service and it covers the whole of the UK. Send the unit in with both numbers written down — the Bosch reference and the full vehicle-manufacturer number, trailing letters included — and the car it came off if you know it. The unit is tested and diagnosed before anything else happens, and no chargeable work starts until you have authorised it.

If you are not certain which base you are reading, ask us to confirm it before you send anything; our engineers will check the reference against what the unit actually is, and repair is quoted on application through the Repair Form. If the unit turns out not to be a ME7.5.10 at all, the make-by-make listing of everything we repair is the place to start instead.

The thirty-nine references are listed below with the vehicle-manufacturer number printed against each one.
