Thirteen of the vehicle-manufacturer numbers on this page begin 06A 906 018. Three of them are 8D0 907 numbers. One is a 037 906 018 number. There is no single VAG reference to look for on the label here, and knowing only that a unit is a VAG petrol M5.9.2 gets you no closer to which one you are holding.

The reference every one of these units does carry is the ten-digit Bosch number stamped on the case; all seventeen on this page begin 0261 2. Read that one first, and read it in full. This is not an argument about which reference is the more dependable. It is an argument about which reference is there at all.

One designation, three generations of car

The three forms are not three ways of writing the same thing. They belong to different cars on different platforms.

The three 8D0 907 references are Audi A4 and Volkswagen Passat units, all documented against the 1.8 turbo. The thirteen 06A 906 018 references are the 2.0 petrol cars — Golf IV, Bora, New Beetle and Skoda Octavia — with the AQY engine, at 115 hp. The single 037 906 018 D sits on an earlier platform: a Golf III Cabriolet.

That last one is why the model name does not close the question either. Two of the cars on this page are called Golf and they are not the same car: a Cabriolet on a 037 number, and Mk4 hatchbacks and estates on 06A numbers. Establishing the badge and the model still leaves the reference open.

The Audi A4 and Passat references

0261204258 carries 8D0 907 557 P and is the most heavily corroborated reference on the page: a European repair catalogue, two parts records, a UK trade seller and listings in two further markets all name it against the Audi A4 1.8 turbo and the Volkswagen Passat.

0261206315 carries 8D0 907 559 C and sits on the same two cars — an Audi A4 1.8 turbo with automatic transmission in the records that describe it, with the Passat named alongside by one of them.

0261204178 is the third of them, carrying 8D0 907 557 N. A UK trade seller and two separate parts listings put it on the A4 1.8 turbo and the Passat 1.8 turbo.

The one fault published against these units in the records we can trace belongs here. A European repair catalogue lists P0605, a control unit ROM error, against 8D0 907 557 P and repeats it against two of the 06A references: the immobiliser does not release, and the engine starts and then shuts off again. A car that fires and dies reads from the driver’s seat as a security problem, when what the entry describes is a failure in the control unit’s own memory.

The Golf, Bora and Octavia references

06A 906 018 FK, Bosch 0261206261, is named against a Volkswagen Golf 2.0 by a European parts operation and by UK listings, and against the Bora by a separate parts record. 06A 906 018 ED, Bosch 0261206322, runs the same way: a Golf IV 2.0 with the AQY engine on one parts record, Golf and Bora together at the same European operation, and three UK listings.

06A 906 018 GM, Bosch 0261206921, is a Golf Mk4 2.0, agreed on by a UK listing, a European parts entry, a stock record and a further record naming the AQY engine.

Two references reach the Skoda Octavia. 06A 906 018 FH, Bosch 0261206266, is documented against the Octavia I 2.0 with the AQY engine by eight separate records, three of them UK listings. 06A 906 018 GR, Bosch 0261206923, is named against the Octavia I 2.0, and against the Golf IV Variant 2.0 AQY by a parts record giving 85 kW.

That is more Skoda than the fitment line above suggests on its own; the Skoda engine ECU entries we keep are grouped separately.

The New Beetle references, and the one Golf Cabriolet

The New Beetle accounts for the largest single group here. 06A 906 018 AD, Bosch 0261204936, is filed against the New Beetle 2.0 (9C) by a European repair catalogue giving model years 1998 to 2001, with three further records agreeing on the car.

06A 906 018 FM (0261206263), 06A 906 018 EJ (0261206327), 06A 906 018 GJ (0261206756) and 06A 906 018 GS (0261206800) are all documented against the New Beetle 2.0i, with the AQY engine named on each and 115 hp on two. 06A 906 018 EQ, Bosch 0261206409, is a New Beetle unit as well, carried by two parts listings and a UK trade seller.

Two more sit in the same 2.0 group without a model line the records agree on. 06A 906 018 FN, Bosch 0261206262, is given as a 1,984 cc, 85 kW petrol unit, and a UK remanufacturer files it against a Beetle with the AQY engine. 06A 906 018 EH, Bosch 0261206326, carries the same capacity and output, but the car named against it changes from seller to seller, so it appears here by number and specification only.

The outlier is 037 906 018 D, Bosch 0261206760: a Golf III Cabriolet 2.0, the 1E7, and the only unit on this page from that platform. A European parts record, two UK listings and two further catalogue entries all place it there.

What a repair on one of these boards involves

Every unit that arrives is logged, inspected and tested electrically before any conclusion is drawn. The work from there is fault-specific: the failure is traced to the components responsible, and those parts are renewed under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment.

What to read off the case before you send it

Start with the ten-digit Bosch number. It is on the case, it is on all seventeen of these references, and on its own it will find your unit in the table below.

Then add the vehicle-manufacturer number in full if the label carries one, trailing letters included; where the numbers take three different forms, a half-copied one is worse than none. Tell us what the unit came out of as well; a number that does not match its car shows up straight away.
