A Simtec 56.5 cannot be identified by looking at it. The 56, 56.1 and 56.5 are visually alike, sellers cross-reference them loosely, and they are not interchangeable — so the variant in front of you is settled by the label on the case, not by the model, not by the year, and not by what a listing says.

Two numbers are printed on that label. The first is the Siemens number, in the 5WK format — 5WK 9064 EK, for instance. The second is the Vauxhall and Opel OEM number alongside it; on that same unit it reads 09 153 240. Listings usually quote the OEM number, a genuine Vauxhall reference, but it is the 5WK number that settles which variant you are holding. Read both off your own unit and check them against the table at the foot of this page.

Getting that wrong is not a small error, because a unit from an adjacent variant will physically fit — it goes in without resistance and nothing about the installation suggests a problem. The pinouts differ, though, and wiring information published for one variant does not describe the loom of another, which is how people end up holding 56.5 diagrams that do not match the harness in front of them. The result is a search for a fault that was never in the car.

Once the variant is settled, what goes wrong inside a 56.5 is physical and it is wear. Solder around the heavier components fatigues under heat cycling and vibration, so a joint that conducts perfectly on a cold board opens up once it warms. The output stages switching the injectors and the ignition carry real current and fail as power semiconductors do — sometimes outright, sometimes only under load. Pins in the multi-plug lose contact pressure or corrode where damp has found a way in, and damp that sits on the board can lift the copper tracks. Each of those is one locatable failure on one board, not a unit that has reached the end of anything.

That is also where repairing the unit you already have stops being a preference and becomes the straightforward answer. Your own 56.5 is, by definition, the right variant: it came out of your car, its pinout matches your loom, and it already carries its own configuration and whatever security pairing it holds. A replacement puts all of that back in question, including the variant. Repairing the original does not answer the identification problem so much as remove it.

A 56.5 that arrives here is logged and inspected, then powered and tested on the bench independently of the vehicle, so its behaviour is measured rather than inferred from what the car was doing. Where a fault is found it is repaired at component level on your original board — the failed part identified and renewed under a microscope with temperature-controlled rework equipment — and the unit is function-tested before it is returned. Symptoms alone do not prove the ECU is at fault. Sensors, wiring and earth paths in the same circuit produce behaviour that looks identical from the driver’s seat.
