SME-101 is a fair name to have searched by: the Ford numbers in our table are on record as SME-101 units. The name brings an engine ECU to this page, and the rest of its label takes it to the right row.

We repair SME-101 engine ECUs at component level, on the unit you post to us. Below, we set out how firmly the name is tied to each Ford number, what the Mondeo can and cannot tell you, which characters separate the rows, and how to get your unit to us.

How firmly SME-101 is tied to each Ford number

SME-101 is on record against the family as a whole. For two of the numbers the link also holds one by one: 93BB-12A650-AC and 93BB-12A650-BC are each on record printed alongside SME-101 in their own right.

With 93BB-12A650-ED and 93BB-12A650-EE, the name rests on the family record rather than on each number alone. That is no reason to doubt either unit, and it shows why we match on the Ford number rather than on the name.

Treat SME-101 as the name of the family and the Ford number as the name of the unit. The first brings you here; the second, with the word printed after it, is what we check your unit against.

What the Mondeo tells you, and where it stops

Every Ford number in our table is on record from a Ford Mondeo. Taken as a family, the numbers are on record from the petrol Mondeo, with 1.6 and 2.0 engines between them.

One number is on record more narrowly. 93BB-12A650-AC is on record from the Mondeo 1.6 in particular.

Useful as that is, the car does not sort the table. A Mondeo is consistent with every row, and the engine size is a detail to pass on to us rather than a way to choose a row yourself. The label does that job.

The two letters and the word that separate the rows

All four Ford numbers in our table begin 93BB-12A650. What differs is at the very end: AC, BC, ED or EE.

Each of those numbers is printed beside a four-letter word, and every pairing is on record: ABLE with AC, BLIP with BC, DESK with ED and DEWY with EE. Copy the two letters and the word exactly as your label shows them.

The two details work as a pair. If your letters read BC and the word reads BLIP, both lead to the same row. If they lead to different rows, read the label again and give us exactly what it shows.

Our table prints each Ford number without its hyphens, so 93BB-12A650-AC appears as 93BB12A650AC, with ABLE after it.

Repairing an SME-101, from arrival to final test

Every SME-101 we take in is repaired in-house by our own engineers, in our UK workshop and on our own equipment. None of the work is passed to another firm.

On arrival, the unit is logged and inspected by eye, then tested electrically before diagnosis turns to the fault you reported. We then contact you with what we found and an estimate, and no chargeable work begins until you have authorised it.

The repair is made at component level under a microscope, with temperature-controlled rework equipment, and the unit is not returned until it has passed final testing. That repair is covered by a 24-month warranty.

Sending an SME-101 engine ECU to us

SME-101 units reach us by post from anywhere in the UK. Before you post yours, tell us about the unit on our Repair Form: the full Ford number with its last two letters, the word printed after it, and SME-101 if the label carries the name.

Include the car and its engine size too, along with a line on how the engine behaved when the trouble started. None of that picks the row, but it tells us where to begin looking once the unit is on the bench.

If your Ford number is not among the four below, there are further Ford EEC-IV numbers on a page of their own. A Ford unit carrying a different name belongs with the Ford engine ECUs labelled with other names, and if the car is not a Ford at all, start from the make on our main engine ECU page.

The Ford numbers follow as our table prints them, hyphens removed, each with its four-letter word alongside.
