A Ford EEC-IV engine ECU number is often written with hyphens, as 93AB-12A650-AC, but our table prints the same characters run together and, on that row, follows them with a short code: 93AB12A650AC AGED. Set the hyphens aside when you read your label against it, and the characters will lead you to the matching row.

Which petrol Fords the EEC-IV numbers are on record from

Taken as a family, the Ford numbers in our table are on record from petrol Fords: the Escort, Fiesta, Mondeo, Sierra, Scorpio, Orion and Granada. Engine sizes on record across the family run from 1.1 to 2.9 litres, taking in the 1.1, 1.3, 1.4, 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.9.

Some numbers are on record often enough to name a car of their own. 92AB-12A650-EB is on record from the Fiesta 1.3, 95AB-12A650-SA from the Escort 1.8, 93BB-12A650-CD from the Mondeo, 88BB-12A650-AB from the Sierra and 90GB-12A650-HB from the Scorpio.

Even then, the car does little to single out a unit. The Escort is on record against numbers under several prefixes, among them 91AB, 92FB, 93AB and 95AB, and 92FB is on record from both the Escort and the Fiesta. Many Fords share the family, so the car narrows the search; the Ford number is what identifies the unit.

How an EEC-IV Ford number is put together

Most Ford numbers in our table share one layout: a four-character prefix such as 93AB, then 12A650 in the middle, then a suffix of two letters, occasionally three. Written out in full, that gives 93AB-12A650-AC.

The prefix groups numbers loosely; the suffix settles which unit you have. 93AB-12A650-AC and 93AB-12A650-CB match up to the suffix and are different units, and so are 95BB-12A650-MA and 95BB-12A650-MB, which part company only at the final letter. Copy the suffix exactly as printed, not the closest one you can find below.

A few Ford numbers in our table begin with a V ahead of the prefix, V95GB12A650AA among them. If the number on your label starts with a V, keep it when you copy the rest.

The short word printed after many of the numbers

Many numbers in our table are followed by a four-character code, and often it is an ordinary English word. AGED follows 93AB-12A650-AC, BACK follows 93AB-12A650-CB, BLOB follows 93BB-12A650-BB, EARS follows 93BB-12A650-GD and BEAU follows 94FB-12A650-BB. Each of those pairings also appears on at least five independent sources.

Not every code is a word, and a few mix letters with digits. Whatever sits beside the Ford number on your label, copy it character for character.

Treat the word as a check rather than a key. On its own it will not identify an EEC-IV unit, so we ask for it alongside the full Ford number, never in place of it.

What happens to an EEC-IV unit in our workshop

Our own engineers repair every EEC-IV unit in-house, in our UK workshop and on our own equipment. Each one is logged and visually inspected on arrival, tested electrically, then taken through diagnostics directed at the fault you have described.

Once the diagnosis is complete, we tell you what we found and give you an estimate. Nothing chargeable is done until you have authorised it.

The fault is then repaired at component level on the board you sent, under a microscope and with temperature-controlled rework equipment. The unit is ready to return only when it has passed final testing, and the repair we carry out is covered by a 24-month warranty.
